When do the brake pad wear indicators come on?

I was taking a peek at the front pads on my D3 and in addition to the backing material they look to be down to about 4mm. That seems pretty thin and prompts the question of when the pad wear indicator comes on? Anyone know?

PS The discs are lipped so they will need to be replaced as well so not too worried of waiting until I really need to change things.

Even when they come on you've got a couple of thousand miles normal driving left.

Mine were in a shocking state when I bought the car as the indicators had been disconnected!

It does get you wondering. I had new front discs/pads 20k ago at Stratstone but how do you know if the wire is connected?

I got caught out with this.

I was aware they were running down but forgot to check again until too late and I'd scored the disks! Banging Head

The indicator didn't come on and when I mentioned this to the LR mechanic he said that there are only sensors in one side (can't remember which) and it he'd had other customers that had been caught out by this.

When the one that doesn't have a sensor has gone and the disk is scoured. Rolling with laughter

Anyone got any more thoughts on this? I actually reckon that my front pads are down to 3mm (plus backing material) on the outside which seems pretty thin to me. Will the light ever come on?

They are supposed to come on at 3mm, but often don't. If they look too close, then change them Thumbs Up

Cheers. I'm going to do discs as well so I don't need to worry too much, just trying to work out how far too push it.

I was given a heads up by my dealer at the last service that both front and rear were going to need done soon. I had the new pads in hand but the bad weather stalled fitting them then I had this happen last week - http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic44739.html. I would say I had about 4mm left on each pad which normally on any non-sensored car I would have lived with down to about 2mm BUT the way the sensor is connected to the pad means you don't have that "luxury". Disconnecting my front sensor temporarily ( which seems to be the one activating ) till my new front pads go on has eliminated the various ambers that I got. Other members talk about only one warning appearing on the dash for the pads activating so I must be especially blessed. Sensors are on front n/s inner and rear o/s inners only so any sticking pistons etc could cause the remaining 6 pads to wear excessively without your knowledge. Mines a D3 basic ie rear sprung suspension so don't know if that alters warnings at all.

had brake discs changed twice as (due to uneven wear of pads) the indicator didn't come on
i've heard that's fixed in D4 though and there are indicators on both sides now
can sb confirm this?
