2007 Auto doing 25% urban, 25% motorway and 50% A/B roads and driven with economy in mind, but not ridiculously so, I am getting 31.5mpg overall. However add in a bit of cut'n'thrust driving or 'making progress' and 27/28mpg is fairly consistent on every D3 I've had (about 6 since 2005) with manual adding about 2-3mpg in like-for-like conditions

wish my 09 auto was that good - as an update, just filled up this morning, 312 miles on 15.09 gal = 20.6 mpg, almost all urban. My 55 plate manual was much better around town, and much more consistant, staying up above 26 around town, and up around 28 even when belting it up and down the motorway. The auto comes up to high 20's, even just into 30's on a steady run, but is much worse around town.

Forgot to add that if its an auto it doesn't lock out in 6th gear till you are doing about 55-60mph so I find myself sometimes gently trundling along and I'm in 5th gear. Slip it over to command shift and manually change into 6th (I know, I know its what the extra cost of the auto 'box is supposed to be doing.... Rolling Eyes ). You are still nicely in the torque band at around 1700rpm and car will pull it cleanly.

On the journey you mention I'd expect to be hitting 31-33mpg if a consistent run.
