Windscreen Washers packed up

Windscreen washers stopped working today. I thought initially that they were just frozen as it was -3 this morning, but even after a decent run today and standing outside with engine heat getting to the bottle, they still don't work. Even if the jets were frozen the pump motor should be making a noise. Its silent...

The back washer is working OK so I assume it can't be just a fuse.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks,
Mac

It may not be the fuse, I had similar issue on a recent trip up to scotland, checked/changed the fuse, still not working and couldnt even here the motor running so thought like you it was the washer motor knackered. Sprayed de-icer down the jets on the bonnet, finally cleared after 6 hours! Shocked

Chances are the waters frozen at the other end, make sure you've got a decent ratio of screen wash/water in the water resevoir!!

Suggest you syphon off what's in there and replace with higher concentration of screen wash but use warm water and then fire some anti-freeze down the jets Thumbs Up

Many thanks for your advice Character. Yep its possible the washer water mix is a bit too watery. So I will give it a go. Hopefully it'll be OK.

How many miles has yours clocked up now?

Cheers,

Mac

313k Thumbs Up

Not playing this week, weather looking a bit silly to be towing with a 170k plus car in the back Thumbs Up

Instead, looking forward to the snow at rush hour tomorrow, then out to play after tea Smile

Impressive. You're cranking the miles on.

Very wise as weather turned worse in may areas now.

Winscreen washers

Strangely enough I had the same problem recently, changed the fuse, which is a pain the ass, worked for 10 mins then has stopped again, thought maybe the fuse wasn't in properly, but too bloody cold to go and check. Was planning to wait until the weather picks up ( in June ??? )

I'll try your suggestion over the weekend.

Cheers

Phil

Mine has blown the fuse twice. It's only minus 4 here at present and the screen wash has about 25% solvent in it. I contacted Hillendales, the local L-R dealer, who recommended fitting a 15amp fuse instead of the OEM 10amp fuse. So far so good.

Washers stopped working yesterday Minus 8, filled up with a better mixture and put a new 10A fuse in and working fine now.

Had to buy some more fuses as couldn't find my spares. Big Cry

Most motor shops sold out but eventually got some.

Is it safe to upgrade washer fuse to 15A?

Suffered same problem with no washers, problem (no surprise here) they packed up following a minus 11c night, (I thought I had a concentrated mix already in!!) thought they would be working after temp rise but it was not to be, the headlight washers worked OK but neither back or rear screen washer. Like others on this site I found that the 10a fuse 11 which is located at the rear of the glovebox was blown. Its a real pig of a job to get the fuse out as its far left on 2nd row down. I had to use some angled long nose pliers to remove old one as the fuse extractor fell behind the bulk head (never to be seen again) to "aid" the refitting of the new fuse I wound some thin fishing line arond the whole fuse so if (and i did) drop it whilst refitting I could recover it again. This worked fine and the fishing line is so thin it does not hinder the fuse going in all the way, in fact i have left it there just in case something similar happens in the future as it will be dead easy to remove it. The only advantage to all this snow was to appreciate that the car will go anywhere !!
