STs are REALLY hard rubber, not a lot of silica, which is why they corner like a greased polecat in the cold.
Conti Winter Contacts or Vredstein Wintracs are good winter tyres available in 255/60/18, or you could get 18" ATRs (which are a lot cheaper than the 19s) as an all-rounder.
The Contis you have with 5mm will be better than the STs in the cold.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

I use STs all the time summer, winter, hot cold etc, never had any problems - perhaps its the way you drive Al Duncan

If I'd known I was going to be so thirsty this morning I'd have drunk more beer last night.

My ST's were always an 'interesting drive' in the damp - could invoke what felt like a four wheel drift without too much effort - MTR's are sooooooooooooo much better Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)
