Guys,
What sort of average mpg are you getting on your new disco 4's then ? Do they take a while to wear in - about 5k or sommat?

In the first 300 miles I have achieved about 27 mpg. I've managed 30 on a gentle run. My guess is that 30 mpg will be regular once run in. Paul

700 miles in and getting 27 mpg and that's not taking it easy. All A roads and plenty overtaking to do up here.

ahh so you are getting 27 mpg which is good, meant to be up 10% from the disco 3. Suppose on a long motorway run you are looking at 30 +

Averaging 27 at the moment.
Saw 32 on the motorway over about 70 miles yesterday.

it also depends on the quality of diesel you are putting in you know - i find with the likes of asda fuel you get 2-3 less than the likes of BP. Not sure if BP ultimate is worth it - expensive but the normal stuff is.

Living in Norfolk and mostly driving on rural roads (very little town driving), I've just completed the first 1000 miles in my D4 at an average of 34.2 mpg. Best was on a run towards London when it peaked at about 38 mpg for a stretch.

Ultimate type grades aside, this is a myth. Yes, there will be differences from tank to tank, but that brand aspect is a complete lottery. At this time of year, though, there are big variations depending upon the "winterisation" properties of gasoil - which can have a significant impact. The topic has been widely discussed numerous times over the years; the supermarkets buy from a range of suppliers, and you don't always get fuel from a major's forecourt that they refined...........

Just done 1500 miles and average fuel showing 25.5 mpg - fair amount of trailor work but cant wait to see the 27mpg. Still a great car but XS is a waste of space - come back SE!!

Update on fuel economy:
Just had a chance to do my first calculated mpg (not relying on the car's on-board computer) and the first 1000 miles has averaged out at 30.2 mpg (compared with the latest from the on-board computer, which is 34.2)

I've covered 1500 miles now at an average of 26mpg according to the car. I'll do my own calculation next full tank. I only ever got 24 from my D3 SE Manual. 2011 D4 Landmark, Mini Cooper SD Clubman, Range Rover Vogue SE

a group of us ran tests last year on the validity of this. we found that the likes of Texaco and BP will typically get 2-3 mpg more. The group was 6 guys with different motors on one weeks fill up. I dont know if anyone else does this, but I tend to put BP ultimate diesel in mine every couple of months to give it a wash out. I know its a lot more expensive than normal diesel but it seems to perform better.

They ran a test on this on fith gear. using petrol and for performance figures but not mpg.
This found that the fuel made no difference on a 1.4 clio, small difference on a 07 Golf GTI, and about 30bhp extra on a subaru STI.
So some cars it works others it a waste of money.  350miles and cant wait to do more.

so i thought D4 was better on fuel than D3
im averaging 27Mpg fully loaded
and on a good moterway run i had it at 36mpg over a long journey
i average between 850 and 1500 miles on a veriaty of roads
and before you shout you got a remap
i havent yet
so based on that i wont be choosing a D$ for better econamy
just curious what band of road tax are they? Survived the 2014 PotNoodle Challenge!

Road tax is £400 odd 
Only done 500 miles in mine so far but the computer says 30ish on short (40 miles) mixed roads and 35 on longer runs. Don't know how accurate this is yet.
Also using Miller Diesel additive for the first time with just normal (whatever is cheapest) fuel. Always used BP Ultimate etc on my Merc 320 CDI as it stopped it sounding like a tractor. I thought I woud try the Miller tratment this time as it seems to be quite a lot cheaper than the Ultimate type fuels in this area.
The performance boost of the D4 over the standard D3 was the deciding factor for me  but I'm not too frightened by the MPG so far
