I'm looking to fit some auxiliary lighting. I am not in a position to go out and spend a grand on top of the range HID this or super-duper that. Therefore, I've narrowed it down to 2 options (well, possibly 4 options but for this thread it will be between two choices).
1. Option to buy a pair of second hand LF240's (Blitz - not XGT model)
2. Looking at some cheaper HID's from ebay (same ones forum member D3Norway has fitted)
The HID's are cheap when compared to LF's, Warn etc. (cheapest is $189 a pair) But they have been getting very, very good write ups on many forums in the US (including buggy racing sites - these lights seem to be tough enough to take that kind of abuse). The cost cutting seems to be in the ballast (not as quick to light up as other HID's so couldn't be used to "flash"); and on part of the mounting bracket (very easily solved).
I don't want LF170's as I'm of the opinion that if I get lights, then I may as well get as much light as possible (SWMBO is not going to like it no matter how big or small - in for a penny, in for a pound... )
So over to everyone's different opinions.
(And for thread completeness - option 3 would be a new set of Roo Lites. Option 4 would be a VisionX Xmitter 18" LED lightbar. Just need to justify 500 euro... which blows my second sentence out of the water )The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

ive fitted 4 LF140s under the A-Bar - they work great. Can easily light up the road well beyond the range of the headlights and will melt a rear window at 200m

I must say I'm really happy with these lights. As you say, there is some lag before they light up 100%. I would say about 2 sec, but this is really no problem in daily use. Exeptional value for money.

well...I still haven't decided... The mention of 4 LF140's has just added to the confusion...The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

The HID ones should be plenty bright enough & you shouldn't have to have heavy duty wiring with them either.
The HID ones...you shouldn't have to have heavy duty wiring with them either
Would that be needed for LF240's ?
Whatever I decide, they will be drawing power from the aux Optima Yellowtop. The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

The HIDS are 35w power (not brightness, that's different) the 240's are 100w power
so if you had a pair of LF's that 200w (16.6A)or a pair of HIDS at 70w. (5.84A)
The std LR Spotlight wiring is designed for 55w (if you have it) the LF's would need their own wiring (not technically difficult) but something to bear in mind.
The 240's are HUGE and need to be supported well, although they are very light
the 240's are blindingly bright though, as the HIDS should also be bright.
Interestingly, on e-blag, the £75 ones are no longer available (was that for one?) you can get the pairs for about £150 inc shipping.
Big, bright & Balls out, go for the LF240's
Bright & more descrete, go for the HID's

In Norway and sweden its very common to put on 3 lamps, usually we put on two 37.5% on each side and a 17,5% in the middle as a pencil beam. I think 2 is to "normal" and 4 would take up way to much space and would be very difficult to mount . So 3 is just perfect and fit nicely in front of the grille.

On the other side, 2 are legal, 3 are NOT and 4 is only legal on cars over 7500 kg
well if I went the HID route, I was also thinking of 3 of them with the hope of getting 2 euro beams and one spot/pencil beam. But it looks like only the euro beam pattern is available.
Bodsy - as yuo said, the LF's are light so despite their size I am hoping they would be an easy fit (if I get them). They won't be fitted direct to teh bumper but (somehow) through the grill. The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...
