Service on the move in remote Australia?

Soon to commence a rather large trip through remote Australia.

From Australia's most Easterly point (Byron Bay lighthouse), to the most Westerly point (Steep Point) - straight through the middle. Then up to Exmouth, Port Headland, Broome across to Mataranka (via Katherine), Roper Bar then Burketown and Normanton. Then crossing the Mitchell River on the way to Musgrave in Cape York. Cooktown and finally Cairns.

I have outlined the route, for as you can see I do not intend to hit 'civilisation' for quite a few months.

There lies the problem, service of the Disco while on the move Confused

I am thinking that Broome might be the go for a large 'service', Exmouth? Then there are other locations where a quick oil change and once over would be good. Interested in peoples thoughts and what they have experienced for service while on the move in these areas?

David

p.s. Alice Springs is not on the agenda, but could be to get an extra service completed.

Is there still a dealer in Karratha?
Did you think I would leave you crying,
When there's room in my D3 for 7,
Climb in here Joe we'll soon be flying,
I can go just as fast with 7.

I read - probably here! - that the dealer in Alice Springs was pretty good. The only other dealer in NT is Darwin and I have not heard good reports about them.

The other option would be to buy the parts required for the A/B service from your dealer before you go - and get a trusted licensed mechanic to perform the service and stamp the service book. The only thing you would miss out on would be software updates and warranty repairs.

Good luck - I'm envious! Mr. Green

Cheers,
Rob

Just looked - there appears to be a complete lack of dealers in WA - outside Perth/Albany! Rolling Eyes Looks like you will need to find a mechanic in mid-to-northern WA to do a service. Rolling Eyes Evil or Very Mad

I'm sure we are all a bit "touched"... Laughing

The best thing you could do is invest in a Satellite phone, If any mishaps occur give Land Rover assist a Call...

Have fun tho =]

As you'll find out on the trip, there is also a complete lack of people i WA - outside of Perth/Albany. Maybe a Volvo dealer in Broome might have the necessary lubricants for the A-service. The Sat Phone idea is a good one for this area.

You can get the Castrol Edge in Repco, so you shoudl be able to buy the oil in Broome. Just carrya filter, sump plug and a few other bits inour spares box. Only the oring needs replacing on the plug, but I carry a whole one as I have a habit of droping such things in the dirt, never to be seen again.

as mentioned, there are no dealers in WA outside Perth (2) or Albany...which is south of Perth.
Shinju Mts in Broome were / are an authorised service agent, but not a dealer.
As you would know, you should carry somer spares for your trip, but for services, ANY motor mechanic OR worshop that do auto maintenance as their business can service the vehicle WITHOUT voiding warranty.
In Karratha, I can suggest Moxham Mtrs (Holden / Suzuki), and ask for Darian to do the work for you. (He's my young bloke and has serviced mine and a workmate's, since the local dealership folded 2 years ago).
Something else to consider will be bookings. In Karratha there is a 2 week, minimum, wait due to the fleets up here. (Financial crisis...what crisis?)

Thanks for the info guys...

Will do a side trip into Alice now just for a service and have booked a service at Shinju Motors in Broome.

Also invested in a Sat phone. There are some good US EBay deals out there on Iridium handsets, easily beating Aus prices and the handsets are unlocked.

Hi David,

I was talking to Sutton motors in Alice Springs this afternoon, planning to get a service and check up there mid October. They need about 7 days notice to book you in at the moment. When I lived in Alice there were times whwere they were so busy you needed to book in 2 weeks in advance, great service when you are booked in, slow if you are not as they only have a small team.
