on long motorway runs to Spain the viscous/cooling fan has been on almost constantly, even worse when on no throttle going down hill, it sounds like a jet at full pelt!
temperature has varied from 17 degrees in sheets of rain, to 42 degrees iin hot sun, averaging 90mph and it is on constantly, this is the third time we have done this trip in this car and it has never done this before.
No warning lights, car fully loaded, fuel consumption is horrendously poor when fan comes on and improves massively when it goes off.
Taking her to the dealers on thursday, but was looking for any suggestions/ideas please?
my shortlist so far is.
Air temp sensor
Fuel temp sensor
EGR valve stuck open (as we are having the slight hesitation and black smoke when accelerating hard from a rolling start)
Out of warranty too, so i'm not keen on some ridiculous bill!

Agree with Bodsy and DsicoDunc.
Plus a possible air temp sensor problem - have you had "Engine System Fault" message coming up but with no power loss, bongs, warning lights etc ?
I recently had the same issue as you along with the warning message. Dealer diagnosed a sensor error which they quickly replaced.
However my radiator was clogged full of mud and the intercooler was caked in the same.
Since cleaning out the rad and intercooler I don't have the fan running and the message no longer appears.
(I think I have a picture of the radiator in my gallery - see if yours looks the same...) The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

thank you for the quick reply chaps.
last off roading was way back in Feb I think, the only thing that has changed was the oil, although I did find stacks of mud under the car which i washed out with a sprayer, so i could have blasted it all in the wrong direction!
please enlighten me on slow hosing the intercooler, where does one hose? 2006 D3 HSE

anyway an UPDATE for those who care (he he)
Stripped out as suggested, almost no mud in there, found a small amount in each corner but 90% of the matrix was clear of mud....
found a very small amount of oil in the large pipe that leads to the central induction chamber (?) (centre top of engine, pipe comes up from between airbox and brake cylinder box)
my money still says egr.... (be good to as LR only fixed it a few months ago in warranty, so fixing it again will be under warranty)...gonna take the thing out when i get home 2006 D3 HSE
