Thick black grease around o/s/r wheel ! |
|
Think the CV boot has split, or is the CV joint itself about to go ?
Just checking the car over before a long weekend in the Lakes, and found loads of thick black grease sprayed all round the inside of the rear offside wheel - it's all over the brake caliper, hub, in fact everywhere
Can't see where its coming from, and as I'm still within warranty - called the local dealer. They offered to take a look tomorrow, but don't have any loan cars .........suggested I call out LRA - I have, they are sending a man in a yellow van.
If the AA tech deems the vehicle unsafe to drive - will LRA supply a replacement, or am I 'grounded' ?
Update - AA man due in the next 8 mins Jim

AA Tech reckons it needs the attention of a dealer - now !
Recovery into stealers arranged for tomorrow morning, depending on what replacement vehicle LRA will provide - AA guy reckons they only do 'standard' motors...........be interesting to see how I get 6 peeps into a focus for the trip to the Lakes at the weekend !
Anyone know if you can insist on a similar vehicle, or is it a case of 'you get what we've got, Sir' ? Jim

You can insist on like for like. Just be polite when explaining that you have 6 people and luggage. You can also request that your car is recovered to your dealer. This way you continue with your journey/holiday. When you get home your car should be fixed and ready for collection. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

You may not get a large 4x4 unless you requested one. The comment your AA tecky made earlier 'they only do standard motors' is Enterprise have a fleet of LR products for us. If they dont get you into one and they use another car from the Enterprise fleet they dont get paid the full amount from LR.
The main dealer will love you you are providing him with work In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Enterprise don't wake up until later in the day, but are due to deliver about 10am - and according to a phone call I got from LRA last night, it should be another D3. Jim

So who is not going then I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

Dealer reckons all 4 tyre are fubar'd............wearing badly on the inside edges (all of them !). I did notice last night that they didn't have much life left in them - so am not surprised.
Dealers quoted me a price for 4 corners, and reckons it will need 4-wheel alignment afterwards (done by them, payable by me )............service girl reckons the alignment may be out as I could have hit a pothole, or driven over rough roads - what's the flipping car designed for ???
Anyhow, I've given them the nod - and got 20% 'loyalty' discount off the alignment price (it's still £149 though !)
What are the thoughts on alignment - a necessary evil, or the dealer making a quick buck ? Jim

Both
It does need to be done unfortunately, but independents with the right kit can do it for a third of that price I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

What is actually needed to do the alignment - other than the laser stuff for pointing the wheels in the right direction, don't they need to put the vehicle into a special 'mode' ? Jim

dealer has to put vehicle into "tight tolerance"... locking down the suspension... ity also needs a full tank of fuel.
my local 4x4 laser alignement place always did this for me when i had my tyres changed ( This is once a year for me) but at the last go, it had to go to stealer first for "tight tolerance"..... price of course is more expensive!!!!
Disco 3s seem to "knock" themselves out of alignement all the time!!.... when mine was last done MPG went up by 2 MPG... probably cos it was working harder scrubbing it tyres out !!! i'm lovin it....

Just collected the D3 from the stealer.....and returned the TDV8 Vogue Rangie LRA loaner
According to the paperwork, they replaced the o/s/r CV gaiter - CV joint was ok. Also had 4 new tyres and 4-wheel alignment done..........can't say it drives any different, other than not squealing quite so much on roundabouts.
I also asked them to look at the brake servo/vacuum pipe, and check for oil - they say it's clear, but I definitely saw traces of oil at the connector on Thursday night. Should I try another dealer, or just wait until the oil gets worse ? Jim
