Steering Knock

Picked up my 06 HSE on Friday - very very impressed indeed I must say. Managed to cover it in mud already!

One thing I have noticed is that on rocky/ rutted tracks (at sensible low off road speeds) there is a "knock" in the steering, hard to describe but feels very different from driving on-road where everything is smooth and lovely.

Feels a bit like metal-to-metal contact somewhere in the steering department, but happens every time the wheels come into contact with a hard object. It's as if the steering has become more "direct", very much like a Defender where you can feel every stone, lump etc etc.

Is this as it should be, or perhaps a known "characteristic" on the D3 ?

It's in for the 3 year service next week (main dealer couldn't fit it in before I needed to take delivery) and I just want to make sure that I'm not crying wolf unnecessarily !

Ta.

it could be one of a couple things on the front end
ARB (Anti Roll Bushes)
Lower Ball Joints
There is also a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) which mentions steerig knock

There is a rubber pad insert mod for the ARB bushes (LR012410) which slots in between the bush and subframe to strenthen the rubber to stop the AR bar from knoocking on the subframe.
Your dealer should be able to identify quiet easily the offending item
 TLO has left the building.......

Many thanks guys, fantastically fast replies ! - I had read about the shims on here and will be sure to mention it (and the other suggestions) to the dealer.

At least I know it wasn't just my mind wishing itself back to the days of my defender !

Yep - that's where I saw it - many thanks !!

With only 27000 miles and a full LR extended warranty - I think it will be them getting the WD40 out and not me!!

I asked similar question.

My knock was present at low speeds and there is slight play in steering too...

Thanks who-ever I pinched this from...

It has to do with the steering colum/rack not the ball joints. There wasa TSB for it and is on here somewhere.

Models: LA - Discovery 3
LS - Range Rover Sport
Title: FAQ 22241 - Steering light knock over bumps.
Engineer Name: Townsend, Ken
Last Modified: 24-APR-06
Category: Chassis
Symptom: 303000 Steering/Handling
Content: User will report light knock over bumps. Some will show slight free play in steering.
Cause is LOWER steering shaft (Under bonnet) NOT the steering rack.
With vehicle static engine off check for free play in steering aprox +/- 3 degrees, with gentle input.
Also some vehicles may exhibit a light knock on uneven surfaces between 10 to 15 mph.
If the shaft is the cause please use new part number QMN500240 (RHD) or QMN500250 (LHD) to repair as this has improved characteristics for noise. Part was introduced to production at L319 - LA390436
L320 - LS956379. If shaft does not resolve knocking noise please submit an EPQR and contact dealer technical support.

Indeed..... a knock.....Mine went in 3 times to solve this....
Lower steering colum replaced (they told me) other bushes (they told me)....

Still have this KNOCK....my visits to the dealer didn't solve the problem.

The only thing they could try more (they said) is change the upper colum....but this ghas to be decide by Land Rover itself....

Answer from LaRo.....Nope, we don't do that in warranty....

So.....bumpy roads go together with a knockking steering.... Sad

I have the knock and have similar experiences to most in that LR (stratstone Evil or Very Mad ) seem incapable of solving the issue!

I've got it on an 07 plate and into the dealers next week to try and solve. Feels tight enough on the road, but just feels like a bit of play somewhere between steering wheel and front wheels when off road. Hard, dry grassy fields or hard dirt tracks seem to be the most noticeable. Will report if they manage to solve the problem

First of my 3 visits....they solved the problem.....for a month ot so....then it came back.

Last conversation with the dealer was: we've changed and tried everything we could, so sorry..... Evil or Very Mad
