Infuriating Windscreen Wiper Problem |
|
Right, here's my problem. The first setting on the stalk for Windscreen Wipers is the automatic setting where the vehicle senses rain on the windscreen and sets the wipers accordingly.
The problem is that it is too sensitive and wipes too frequently, this means that I get that horrid SCRAPE across the windscreen as there isn't enough water to lubricate its passage. The next setting up is for the wipers to wipe constantly, and this is no good either. This means that during light rain I am forced to use the wipers manually every time I want them by flicking the stalk up to constant, letting them do one wipe and then switching them off again.
How can I sort this? Honi Soi Que Mal Y Pense

Obvious maybe but have you twisted the end of the stalk to reduce the sensitivity?? 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

If you look down the stalk, twist it all the way anti-clockwise to reduce the sensitivity, but in my experience it hardly changes it at all.
If the wipers are scraping, maybe try renewing the blades. I fitted some Valeo Extreme blades, and they are far smoother in operation than the stock LR blades.

Strangely I find that if I turn it up to max sensitivity for 5 seconds, then back to lowest, it improves the situation. Dr. Ian Malcolm:

Transgenic tomato anyone?

the variable bit on the stalk changes the frequency of my rear wiper, and has no effecton the front..
try cleaning the windscreen sensor with some meth to get rid of athe grease that builds up Duncan

I am sure mine has a single wipe mode. I'll need to check tomorrow but I am sure that if I push the stalk down it does a single wipe.

Yes Gaza, it does. But manually activating the wipers during drizzle is likely to keep you awake when the auto-wipers could be giving you the chance of a good kip Dr. Ian Malcolm:

Hi Gaza. Yes if you put the stalk down it does wipe once but it does it really fast which I find sprays the water all over the screen requiring more wiping so I use the ordinary slow one.

Hi Gaza. There is a really easy fix, buy some Rainx wiper bottle fluid from your local spare parts store.
Add the required amount, it is important not to put in to little as it does not work as well. This magic stuff lubricates the glass and seems to make the wiper rubber softer to so no more chattering .
The really big bonus is that the rain beads on the windscreen and makes it easier to see through meaning you need your wipers much less and it is a safer drive. At speeds over 80kph it actually starts to blow the water up and off the screen so sometimes no wipers are needed despite the fact it is still raining Life is short...get it dirty...as often as you can.
