Sat Nav got lost!

The sat nav has always greatly impressed me with its accuracy and the features. The vast majority of the time, it is so accurate that it is spooky, it is almost as though someone is watching you from above!

Yesterday however, I was travelling to Aberdeen from Manchester, via Gullane. This journey involved going through the centre of Edinburgh. I would normally ignore its directions through the town and take the bypass, but yesterday I needed to stop in Edinburgh city, so I followed it.

I don't know whether the roads have been altered in the city recently and that the nav disk is out of date, but it took me round and round the the streets in the centre, constantly changing its mind. It even changed its mind while I was sat still in traffic! and decided that I should turn left, when It had me waiting in a queue to turn right! In the end, I gave up and followed the road signs. When I eventually escaped, it regained its composure and carried on normally.

Can sat nav be affected by external forces? like radio waves or was it just the buildings interrupting the satelite signal?

Gareth how many sats were you picking up, because you need at least 6 to be OK, 10 or 12 is much better. Edinburgh should not be a problem.

Gareth,
A similar thing happened to me in Abingdon over Easter - on two or three separate occasions. Must be particular areas where the mapping isnt quite right (causing the routing to 'error').

Perhaps it was the chap who was sitting on a ledge above Waverley Station for a couple of days earlier this week plus the road works on Princess Street that confused your sat nav. It certainly confused (and frustrated me) as I spent hours going nowhere in Edinboro traffic on Monday.

I have to say mine chooses some pretty strange routes sometimes, despite telling it to use main roads it nearly always tries to take me through town centres Rolling Eyes

To be fair, I have found the route selection very good here, although when there has been recent road construction it can appear as if you are meant to be going off-road!! Wonder what version/date the sat nav DVD is? & when updates are issued?
