Extended Roof Rails - Kayak Q |
|
If you were to fit the extended roofrails to a D3, would it be possible to put a third cross bar closer to the front, over the front sunroof, so as to help with carrying a long sea-kayak for instance?
A friend asked me this last night and I couldnt say eitherway so just wondering if anyone has the extended rails fitted and if it would be possible.
Thanks A happy childhood ... is the worst possible preparation for life.

i would imagine that as the front section is lower the roof bar would sit about 6 inches too low to be of any use to your sea kayak?

Tnks Ad but dont the extended roof rails come out at the same height over the front so in theory they should be level
Its more a question of wodth. I think the rails are closer at the back of the roof than at the front so with the extended bars are the extended bits further apart and therefore too wide for a cross bar? A happy childhood ... is the worst possible preparation for life.

Yes you can get a roof bar that mounts on the front part of the roof.
But it won't be the LR 'aero' style.
When I got my Rhino half rack from BOAB, they made me aware of this in case I wanted the full length rack.
On the link, scroll down and hit the D3 image at 'Oztent Basket'
http://www.boab.biz/Pages/RHINO-RACK,%20Au...20BOAB.htm
Then conatct TJ at BOAB on 01684 591154.
Got my sea kayak on just the 2 bars though.
My kayak is much shorter [@12'] then the standard.
The reason I didn't want a full sized one. ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

Is this with the standard Land Rover cross bars?

Thanks lads
Nismo, you know the front of the extended bar - over the drivers door - are they blanked of and only there for the look are is there a channel in the top of them for a cross bar? Where you have the bar for the Rhino rack, is that the farthest forward you can put them?
I think the set-up on the Boab page might be exactly what he's after. A happy childhood ... is the worst possible preparation for life.

I've got the longer rails and it looks like the 'open' part of the rail (which is level the whole length) finishes over the drivers door. I haven't pushed the bars that far forward to check how far they go though.
One thing I noticed on my bars is that one is marked 'front' and one 'back' so I can only assume the rails are different widths at each end (good design idea!) I think the stealers said that its different bars for short or long rails so maybe not interchangeable.
Hope this helps.

I looked into this a while ago for my roof tent.
The 3rd (shorter) rail required for the front is a separate part number from the normal 2 rails.
