| Where has my diesel gone!!! |

Has anybody else experienced this, when the fuel tank is full to the brim, the needle is at the top and the range left in tank goes up and all appears well. Suddenly you get a low fuel warning bong and the guage drops to zero! it stays like that for a few miles and then just as suddenly as it dissapeared it returns again. this happened about 4 times the other evening on a 50 mile run out to a party and not once since the fuel level dropped a bit! any ideas greatly received. I think its the sender going past full scale but don't know where its located so as to have a quick look.[/b]

I had this problem
Dealer renewed both senders
Still had the problem
After investigating further they discovered wires under the front wheel arch were rubbing (shorting) on the chassis
Re-cabled and re-routed
All is fine now

You got any pics of where the offending wiring is - I have had repeated issues with the fuel gauge readings but stealers calim nothing wrong  . Could be this is my issue - as I am out of warranty want to check this out myself .

SImon - No, sorry, the dealer did the work and never even showed me where it was - just told me
I guess I could have a look next weekend and see if I can see signs of where the repair / whatever was done.
If I find it I'll take some pics

for <07MY it's the middle (dark grey) connector behind the N/S wheel arch liner, pins 13.14 & 15

I get this quite a lot and am pretty sure it is fuel sender(s). With me it is when I have under 1/4 of a tank left and park it on a steep bank for half and hour or so. Come back and it tells me it is empty. The first time it had me worried!  Thought some  had syphoned my fuel! But they had not and as I drove home the fuel gauge went back up and the range increased about 1 mile per mile. Wish it would do that all the time!
