Screaming EPB – FIXED
EPB decided to start screeching like a banshee on Saturday.. When stationary and applied, it made the loudest screeching etc and then lots of bongs with yellow and red warning lights. Wife said it made a loud noise a few weeks ago but as it had not happened to me, I assumed it was imaginary!
Anyway, happened to me Saturday morning at the LR main dealer (I was back getting them to correctly fit the A pillar trim after a warranty windscreen change). They did the computer diagnostics and reset and said it should be ok. WHY are dealers such lying gits? Drove home, EPB screams and now will not release. Did the “hold the button down trick†and went back to dealer.. They said they would need to book it in to give the EBP a thorough clean and service. (And charge a ridiculous amount to get back the labour charge they had to refund on the last service after trying to scam me for pads).
Result: Came home, downloaded the LR TSB and instructions from another thread and set about adjusting the brake shoes.. very simple job. On one side the adjuster had no thread visible so the shoes had wound right back,. Did the adjustments and now seems to work better than ever. I think one side was too tight and the other totally slacked off.
If anyone has the same problem, it really is worth trying to check the adjustments yourself (provided you have a jack and stands). No special tools needed and very easy to do..

Just be careful you don't over do it, or you will have glowing disks and delaminated shoes on the next high speed run.

doing it yourself means you might not find your brake shoes on one side disintergrate through over adjustment and no trainee tech to blame or get re-imbursement from

I have adjusted mine myself ...not due to screaming EPB but due to changing the rear disks . As you said very easy to do and least you know you have done the job right G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

Appreciate the comments but the Disco actually rolls at junctions now (when the handbrake is off I should add)! Unless it’s my optimistic imagination, it only moved when you used the accelerator in the past. I think it was tight on one side and loose on the other. If I cannot feel the shoes binding when I turn the wheels by hand, and I have checked for heat from the rear hubs after a run, and was careful to turn back 8 clicks on the adjuster, I should be in the clear unless there is some other LR gremlin I need to know about.
My first cars had drums all round and it was a simple case of winding the shoes until they did bind, and then slacking back until the drums spun freely. Always used to do my own mechanical work and whilst the electronics may be a mystery on newer cars, some concepts should be the same.. You guys have me worried that I am missing something.
BTW: I need a LR specialist in Berkshire now that the warranty has expired (end March) and I am not beholden to the franchise network anymore. Any recommendations?

The D3 park brake is very fickle. It can stick on. If the shoes are not sliding freely against the backplate, or if it is full of dirt, then they can fail to retract properly.
1st sign of trouble will be a shuddering sensation at speed, it will feel like you have a flat tyre. When you pull over to investigate, you will see the offending wheel is very hot. You may not get this, its just a warning to watch out for.

It seems that with my EPB that the "auto release" when you off drive seems to cause a problem after a while with the shoes not lifting cleanly. I gather its different from flicking the switch, maybe due to cable tension..?
Not a mechanic by any means but thats my observation.

Having read the various threads I decided against the bedding in procedure. Did not take the disc off and not too worried about dirt yet.. Only done 30k miles and no offroading other than snow so little chance of being full of crude. Took a look through the adjuster hole and looked pretty clean.

I have done 87000 miles and it has seen plenty of mud . I was very surprised at how clean mine was inside. Did not bother changing the shoes as they had plenty of meat left on them . Its not as if im trying to do handbrake turns in it so there not realy gonna wear that much G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

Can somebody make a video with a D3 making a handbrake turn? I tried it at 50 km/hr and the passengers had a different experience then they expected. Roel

Hmmmm . Not sure you could do a handbrake turn in a Disco.
From LR's description of how the system works, pulling up the EPB switch whilst traveling at speeds above 10 km/hr normally tells the ABS module to apply all four disc brakes - the EPB is only applied when the car's speed drops below 2.5 km/hr.
There are a couple of fall back modes though. Mode 1 - if the ABS module can't apply the disc brakes for some reason, the EPB module will apply the parking brake and use wheel speed information from the ABS module to regulate cable tension to achieve the desired deceleration rate and to provide an anti-lock function.
Mode 2 - if there is no communication between the EPB and ABS modules, or the CAN bus has failed, the EPB will be applied under "Driver Control" . There is no anti-lock function available.
So, perhaps you can do a handbrake turn if you disconnect your ABS module first Now an ex-D3 owner after 7 happy years. Miss the car but not the big bills
