Strange Noises, or Is It Because It's Quieter Than a 90...?
Had my late '06 Disco a month now, my 17th Landy but first D3. After very many 90's, any noise is usually sorted by turning the music up.. However, the D3 seems to have a couple of strange emanations.. (Is that rude..?) At 50mph in 6th, when I would expect quietness, it sounds quite 'tappety', is this normal as I would have expected more soundproofing? I know diesels usually sound like that, but... My 90 TD5 doesn't sound like that and neither did my V6 TDi Passat.. Also, a noise has developed when the engine is under load, it's not there under a light throttle, usually at fairly low revs and it seems to be from the engine rather than the trans, an intermittent, harsh whirr, whirr whirr... (!) Turbo?? It soon passes when the revs rise or fall beyond that phase.
Or should I put on the 1812th?Make the most of this life, you may not have a Landy or skis in the next one.

Mine wouldn't go into 6th at 50mph (auto), maybe the engine is struggling with too low revs???
It's a manual and is quite happy at 50 in 6th on the level. That speed/revs was just an example as under under a light throttle I wouldn't have expected it to be so tappety.. Anyone know if the tappets are hydraulic? I suppose the best thing is to wheel it into a dealer for a check; more concerned about the other noise..Make the most of this life, you may not have a Landy or skis in the next one.

Thought it might be.
My wife's D3 had something similar under light load until turbo was replaced, now gone. Don't know if related but noticed tappet type rattle gone after change.
Aaarrrggghhh. Still under warranty though... Do you use Macrae & Dick, Landy fumblers to the trade, or Oggs? I see we are near neighbours D3 Forum-wise. I used to live in 'The Boat' 20 years ago..Make the most of this life, you may not have a Landy or skis in the next one.

Oggs! they are fitting a new turbo to my car next week, did SWMBO's couple if weeks ago. The Boat is lovely place, pass through when walking hounds at Loch Garten in winter, too many twitchers in summer!
Hmmm, so you might say it's a common fault!! Now near Foxhole, Kiltarlity.. House in The Boat didn't have land for SWMBO's nags.. Were in G-o-S three weeks back, mainly the little sweetie shop.. I know a few people in M&D's but their reputation is, errr, not good..Make the most of this life, you may not have a Landy or skis in the next one.

DSL, are your motors under warranty? If so, any squirming from Oggs about doing the jobs under warranty? I'm wary of what can be termed 'wear & tear' having had M&D refuse a very minor job on my 90 under extended warranty. It cost me £3.50 and 5 mins to fix.. They did replace the brake servo, however..Make the most of this life, you may not have a Landy or skis in the next one.

Frank Ogg have been VERY good re the faults under Tesco warranty!!! They have set up the account and liaised with Car Care Plan (who run the warranty) and the inspection engineer. I have agreed with Donnie, the service manager, that I have a genuine LR turbo fitted rather than the one that would be supplied by CCP, and pay the £107 (incl VAT) difference. The workshop foreman is much more knowledgable than anyone I spoke to at M&D and was a bit pee'ed off at their attitude re my EGR fault, they also changed all the height sensors on my car and the car sat 2" too high, Ogg sorted it out.
Looks like Oggs it is, then.. Just a bit distant to take both motors over there (to leave one..). Have 90 in barn to 'tidy up'. Don't know where to start! Rust and blemishes breaking out all over. Must be nearly June..Make the most of this life, you may not have a Landy or skis in the next one.

IMHO worth the extra 35 miles (x2) for Oggs, I used to live in Newport (S Wales) with dealer 5 miles away! The joys of living so far from The Smoke!
