land rover servicing on north shore |
|
Hi
I recently moved to the lower north shore in Sydney and used to use Graham Cooper in St Peters, but i was wondering if anyone had used Alto in St Leonards as that would be the closest garage to our new location.
Also, i am getting warning messages coming up and i cant recall what they all said, but one was that Special Programs wasnt available, EPB problem etc...not much use i guess but after 2 or 3 starts they disappear. seems a common problem...

I cannot help with the question but surely the local landie forum www.aulro.com would be able to give you the answers you seek - sure there are a few Aussies here and it is a great site but there are thousands on AULRO.
Cheers

Alto have been good to me but recently new management introdeced a $25 a day charge for their loaners (I get it at a once off charge) and a 1.5% credit card fee. They are next to the train station if that helps. Major work I would get quotes elsewhere.
Your issue could have a number of causes but the easiest ones to look at are the brake light globes shorting when they fail and the brake switch. Make sure your brake lights are working and then clean the brake switch. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

My car came from Alto, went there for a 6 month check up. I've had no issues with them. Cost of their service looks in line with a post on AULRO with service prices from a Melbourne dealer. I'm happy to take it back there for the annual service which will be soon.

Only heard good things about Ayers Automotive in Brookvale's work. They are my local and I'll be going there for servicing etc. Ordered a part and picked it up from them yesterday. Was cheaper then what ALTO quoted me which is always a good start.
But I would say that the only two times I've been there I got painted a very negative outlook of the costs of running, repairing and servicing these vehicles. I though this was odd considering that their business is all about looking after these vehicles!
We love our D4 and didn't really need any impending doom stories...lol.

Did you check the brake lights/switch? “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

yep - by the time i took in both rear lights had gone and the switch needed replacing, not to mention the starter motor, earth lead and housing. and thats before they have even looked at the trans fluids. i think i am just going to bite the bullet on ALTO and then go to GC for the flush - was quoted around 1100 from Ward which seems reasonable, compared to Ayers and Pete Davies.

Make sure that they use the right ATF. Very important. Best to use ZF stuff. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Thanks Caver
Picked up my car from Alto and they told me if i wanted to book it in for trans flush that there was no guarantee that it would solve the problem (vibration at 40km/h) and that if it didnt work it actually makes the transmission worse (bearings etc.)then i would have to replace the whole transmission at a cost of around $6500 on top of the flush. he said 7/10 cases it works but there is always the 3 cases where it doesnt. didnt convince me but was concerned that i could end up paying over $8000 for both. was good of him to point this out to me though as he said that they had noticed this happen more often.

Happened to mine and got a recon one from A&B under my extended warranty. $6500 is for recon one. You could try an oil change. rather than a complete flush and see if there is any difference.
Is your vibration only speed related or at gaer change? If only speed related it is drivterain balance issue ( (driv shafts?) “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

it seems to be at 40km/h but i cant really tell - when the LR master technician was driving it he thought it was the transmission. funny thing is that Ward at GCA couldnt replicate the problem but the LR guy noticed it as soon as i described it to him - it happens when you go over 40 then slow down and then hit 40 again. would a new trans be covered under extended warranty? i have one with Allianz

Yes they recon yours via A&B, they sent me to some auto palce in parra who knew nothing about ZF boxes and I I had to argue. Diagnostics are important but difficult. Driveshafts can give the same sort of result especially the front that is close to the cat and gets hot dying out the CVs.
Difference is if the TC in the trans is at fault it is a judder rather than a vibration. driveshafts give feel like an out of balance wheel but at a higher frequency as they spin faster.
Has the Alto tech driven it yet? Get as many opionions as posible from someone who has experienced different faults.
Mine needs a new front driveshaft as it has vibration at about 70ks more under load. But the front one produces various symptoms but usually speed related.
Since my transmision went I know the difference between a judder and a vibration.
This is why I think that it may not be trans as it is speed related. Trans issues usually relate to judder, fluctuating revs usually under load and gear changes or locking/unlocking of the TC.
Do a search on here under "transmission flush" and see how others have described the symptoms. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

I'll be going to Ayers for the first annual service. Alto quoted $875. On top of that I got a lecture on how only Land Rover approved equipment should be attached to the OBDII port and that independents all go to dealers to have the diagnostics read. Surely not?
