Looking to buy a DISCO

Hello All,

Can I thank you in advance for any replies !

We have a third child due at the end of April, at whch time we will have 3 children under 5, all good fun. We have finally dawned on us that we need a car to seat the family !!! My wife has a VW EOS, so that will have to go as it wont seat 5 !!

After much investigation, and an aversion to a MPV of any sort we have choice of Honda FRV or a DISCO... DISCO wins hands down, I think.

This is where we need some help.... we have found a Dec 2005 SE with 55k at a main dealer for £19.2k, what is perplexing me is that all the valuations sites (incl Glass's), and Parkers is saying that this car should be nearer £17k, the dealer is saying that there has been a +£2k price uplift since December and the valuation sites are out of date. To be fair to them all the main dealer prices are the about the same. Any comments ?

The wife wants to buy from a main dealer to have the one year warranty.

I did see a 57 plate HSE with 18k at a car supermarket recently at £27k, my view is that this has a chunk for original warranty left on it, and at £7k more than a 3 year old it seems good value, am I missing anything ?

The posts on here on what to look for when picking up are good.

Finally, we own a caravan so do I go for the detachable towbar or the multi height tow bar, whats the purpose of the multi height (apart from the obvious) ?

Thanks again.... Hope we can sell the EOS and get a DISCO before the baby arrives !!

Paul

hi paul,

used values are going up, but glasses comes out i believe monthly? so should not be out of date,,, FYi bought an 05 SE with under 30,000 miles on for under £16,000 only 3 weeks ago....

funny the stealers will throw glasses at you to say your car is worth nothing, funny how they now claim it is out of date....

Price sounds a bit on the high side to me, keep searching and find a similar car and make them match the price. Try the Autobytel site. See if you can get a late 56 plate which if you check the VIN it should have "7A" at the start meaning its an 07 model which has a lot of improvements.

I have a fixed multiheight towbar which does give the option of different heights of towball, some say the detachable is a bit low sometimes. I also believe that it is far easier to attach cycle racks etc.. to a fixed towbar.

I stand to be corrected on the above as their are a lot more people on here who know a lot more than me, but thats my two penneth.

Nope, private, was not really impressed with the main dealer cars of this sort of age, this one was mint, I still can't find a scratch or stonechip on it. The leather was perfect as well which is always a bugbear as the drivers seat squab can take a hammering when climbing in and out. No warranty of course but £500 would buy Tesco's finest and still leave me a lot of change compared to a dealer price.

Oh and check out the owners house in the background - lets just say the car wanted for nothing and the owner really didn't care how much any work cost as long as the car was kept perfect - always a good guide to how well the car has been treated.
Shame the owner never replaced the slightly faulty early Bluetooth module under warranty though! The odd time on start up it goes onto 'Listening' mode and its impossible to store names.

For your info i looked at a 55 plate SE with 32k in the LR dealer up here and they wanted £18995. It drove like a dog and clearly had either turbo or egr problems. Then viewed a 55 plate SE with 48k in an independent trader. Higher spec (xenons and glass roof) and drove brilliantly. i bought it for £15495. Apparently the garage has an arrangement with the LR dealer to sell the cars they dont want to, either cause the miles are a bit higher or they have enough in stock already. I think the extra mileage is irrelevant.
£3500 made it an easy decision. Dealers are crap beyond belief. Why would anyone pay that degree of premium for a car just to have the reassurance that a dealer will get the retarded monkeys they employ to "fix" it. That kind of money would probably get you a new engine, gearbox and suspension at a good independent specialist.
Don't buy from a dealer. They are overpriced and dont give a toss about you or your car as soon as you've paid for it.

Is there a sticky anywhere on here for good independent traders and repairers by region?

Some people on here are using Tesco insurance. Why not buy privately, and then purchase a warranty separately. That way you won't pay the dealer premium.
