Spare wheel bracket, recovery points & High lift jack |
|
Hi there
I have decided to not use trailer for our trip in June.... I now need to get the packing perfect
Spare wheel bracket for 6th wheel , 2 (or double) jerry can holders on RR and I think recovery/jacking points for High lift jack plus mount high lift jack.
So who can do all of this the best ? or is there better wheel brackets from some-one spec.
I don't think I will so long range tank so maybe the spare on tow bar bracket so I cab remove it when back is an option ?
and then recovery/lift points from some-one else ?
Any input welcome
Tx

Some one had posted that they had done the rear jacking points,
that was along time back and never found it again. As far as I know they
are not available. As for the jerry can brackets, they are available at any
off road shop. Can give you a hand to mount your stuff on the RR, just
send a PM with contact details. D3 bullbar-spots-roof rack with spots-ladder-long range tank-swing out spare wheel carrier- upgraded tow bar-dash console-internal water tank-duel awnings-drawer system & T T.

Nico, remember the weight limitations of the rack - 2 Jerrys is over 50kg, spare wheel is between 30 and 40kg depending on tyre choice.
Fuel is always a difficult to decide on - it's smelly and dangerous. You certainly want it outside. But more than 2 jerrys on the roof is looking for trouble. Roofracks suck, but if you have no option, rather pack the bulky light stuff on top.
I can certainly recommend the long range fuel tank, but it is not easily removeable, so once it's in you are stuck with it. It also makes the rear wheel carrier mandatory, unless you plan to rove around with a spare in the boot or on the rack. The combination makes touring effortless though.
High lift jack points I haven't seen. Air jacks are the only other option. If you get one, make sure you also get a bung to block the second exhaust. And don't ever try use it on your driveway cos the car will slide. Ask me how I know - I nearly parked my D3 in the fishpond

I have made contact with a guy that does tow-bar spare wheel bracket - will explore it is a lot cheaper and not as permanent so good option.
The diesel - only 2 cans must go on the RR - I know the weight thing but don't have a choice and LongRange tank not really my cup of tea - I want to have 2 spare wheels when travelling.
Also I will not keep the jerrycans full for the whole trip - section that fuel might be a problem and for the rest I will keep littlebit in the jerry's about 20l total just to have back-up. Maybe a bracket that takes spare plus 1 or 2 jerry's hanging from the back is the way to go...

Hi there Anthony these are the closet towns that we will pass..
Gweta - Maun - Tsumkwe - Tsumeb - Etosha - Ruacana - Epupa - Opuwo - Khorixas -Uis - Henties - Windhoek
Then back to SA.
The bit from maun to Tsumkwe (Boesmanland below Kaudom) is via the only real offroad portion...
I don't know the road but just got the following from a website of one of the nearby Lodges in NAM
"...The border post at Dobe, 53km east of Tsumkwe, is now open 7 days a week (7h30 to 16h30 Namibian time) and provides a thoroughfare to Botswana. The 4x4 track to Nokaneng is about 140km. The average speed one can maintain on this road is 50 kph. The nearest fuel would be 30km north of Nokaneng at Gumare or at Maun."
There is also not fuel available in Tsumkwe - So the stretch from Maun to the next diesel could be.
So Maun to Grootfontein is 675km - without any detours
I reckon I will use 13.66l / 100 km over this stretch - I drive very relaxed when on holiday but RR and 4x4 track will increase consumption. (675 + 50(xtra) = 725 = 575km (normal) & 150km (offroad) @ 12l and 20l per 100km = 99l needed this gives me 1 tank & 1 Jerry. So I reckon 2 jerry's and I will be fine.
I will cary a bit of fuel in the jerry's the rest off the trip to be safe but will try and keep weight on the RR down.
