Greenoval - depends on how many bikes you want to carry.

If its two or three, then Thule, Antera are the ususal ones (and very good).

If its five bikes then Maxxraxx is your only choice...but its the only 5 bike carrier I have ever found. And the D3 is one of just a couple of vehicles that can take 5 bikes on a single rack.
The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

Club "yes, I too have had the EGR's replaced..."
Club "yes, I too have had the compressor replaced..."
Club "yes, I too once had the car at the dealer for a couple of weeks nearly 4 weeks over 4 weeks...5 weeks"
Club "yes, I too have had EPB failure..."
Club "yes, I too get mysterious bings and bongs..."

I use a Thule EuroClassic Pro 903, which has the big advantage of tilting so you can still open the tailgate with the rack fully loaded with bikes. As the rack supports the wheels of the bike, with the clamps on the rack only used to steady the bike, the bikes are held more securely and don't move around, which limits damage.

The downside being the rack is heavier and more awkward to fit over what you're looking at, as well as more expensive. But if your taking the family out riding, having access to the tailgate makes unloading and reloading alot faster, which makes for a happier family.

If you have high end bikes I would definitely go with the 903, but for casual use the 970 should be fine.

I went for the Pendle Wheel support rack, available to fit both detachable towbar and bolted towbars, for 2, 3 or 4 bikes. You can also get a 3 bike tilting one as well for access. I got mine through an E Bay shop, just search for Pendle bike rack.

Also interested in the Thule tilting bike racks......Is it only the glass tailgate you get access to or can you open both?

I think that the Thule racks only allow the top part of the tailgate to be opened - I have the Atera Strada 3

http://www.roofbox.co.uk/scripts/rbvehsel4...&qty=1

With the extra add-on it will carry 4 bikes and folds away from the car so that you can open top and bottom sections of the tailgate which is essential if your going on longer trips (IMO). Great piece of kit.

You can open both the upper and lower parts of the tailgte with the Thule rack I have. Three bikes is the most you can fit on it. Fitting three bikes is somewhat of a jigsaw to get all the bikes to fit, especially the first time.

I have the Thule 903 (? ISTR) but this has been now superceded. I carry 4 cycles as I purchased the extender. A bit of a jigsaw the first time, as McGlade says but a great piece of kit and I would recommend it.
 ALTERNATIVES...............No alternatives for off-road capability.
If you want Surrey plush, go for a Range Rover. If you want Manchester bling it's the Range Rover Sport. But if it's a seven-seat, go anywhere 4x4, it's time to Disco.

I have a cheap one I picked up from the bike shop. It slides into the hitch, but the only downside is that it creates overhang and decreased your departure angle to that of a thunderbird. I have to put the D3 in off road height to get out of the drive way.

It has a pin you pull out to get it to tilt, but with 4 bikes on it's impossible to get back into position if you do tilt it. So that funtion is useless really.

With four bikes to fit on I also found it like a puzzle to get them all on, so here's a tip:

One day I spent some time getting it just right, I took a photo from the rear of the car with all four bikes on, then took the outer one off, and took another photo, took the third one off and another photo...and so on

You end up with four photos showing how each bike needs to go on (in order and direction). I double side printed an A4 piece of paper with the 4 photos, laminated it and put it under the passanger seat.

Now I don't have a swearing fit every time I load the bikes up Thumbs Up

.....and my six year old can now mimic my acceptable public language instead of my sailor talk!!
