the rain sensor on my 2006 LR3 appears to have its own mind. it does not respond to the sensitivity dial. and more often than not wipes way too often, but sometimes in heavy rain may just become insanely intermittent.
i checked with the dealer, who suggested to replace the dial (under warranty). but now a couple of months later i still do not see any difference from the way it worked previously.
is there a consensus on whether it is a known issue? and what the fix is, if any. our second car is Volvo V50, and the rain sensor there works like a charm.
thank you.

I thought the dial only affected the rear wiper

The dial on mine does indeed affect the speed and sensitivity of the wipers if set to the first notch up... auto / intermittent (in old money).
Affects the rear wiper too.
Maybe the rain sensor itself is not working correctly ?

It affects both, well that's what it seems to do on my D3 (and the last one), works well
gvmnt, presumably you've checked the screen is clean/undamaged up by the sensor and the housing behind the rear view mirror hasn't come away from the screen? If so maybe your dealer should change the sensor The End

the sensor and the screen in front look to be clean and clear. i just was wondering if others had similar issue. i guess my next step will be to ask the dealer about changing / checking the sensor itself.

The dial on mine doesn't seem to affect the sensitivity either. Well, if it is changing it, it's so minor I can't tell.
Which way do you turn it for "less sensitive"? 2013 LR4 HSE lux | Santorini Black | 5.0 V8

This is the only minor niggle I have had with my D3 - and I totally agree with gvmnt, that the wiper sensitivity control doesn't seem to make any difference at all. It is a bit frustrating, but not enough for me to take it to the dealer to get the inevitable " we have tested it and can't find anything wrong" response. That said, I am sure the sensor is working because it detects rain immediately and switches to 'fast' when either speed or rain intensity demands it. Certainly not as effective as the manual intermittent control on the D2. I was taught to be cautious.

The sensor on mine works on intermittent then moves to continuous and intermittent mix depending on rain/spray then to high speed.
Seems to be fairly clever if not a bit over zealous on clearing the screen sometimes.
Dial does make a difference but not that much, just delays the first sweep.

My intermittent front wipe has a mind of it's own - I had the Dealer look at it recently when the motor was in for an FBH replacement under warranty. It also reacts differently to the same amount of rain on the screen depending on whether its daylight or dark! The intermittent wipe on my D1 however, works well and consistently! That's progress for you I guess!

Maybe MY08 has working rain sensors then.
Mine are a real boon after having non auto ones.

My wipers work OK on the rain sensor setting (dial pointing upwards), but believe that the other parts of the dial are meant to be an intermitent wipe of various sensitivities. Turning the dial seems to make no difference to how the wipers actually work, every setting just works to the same 'speeds' of rain sensor. Assume that there are some contact / software / relay issues somewhere - added to the list of things to get looked at next time she goes in for a service. 11 HSE Santorini Black

I have a 56HSE and agree that the automatic wipe system is a complete waste of time. Mine operates too frequently at the slightest spitting of rain and the rotary control makes little noticable difference. I have had it back to two different dealers and they each say that "it works as intended on this model sir!. I have asked if it can be disconnected and revert to manual variation of intermittent, but am told this is not possibe. I have had limited success with blanking off part of the sensor (with insulation tape) to reduce it's sensitivity. The irritation was worse with the skidding OE wiper blades, but the Valeo blades have cured that problem. Nowdays I never use the intermittent setting, but operate a very manual and infinately vaiable intermittent control using the single sweep control.
