Suspension test

I'm planning to run a little experiment on my D3 overnight tonight, to see if my sinking suspension (normal > access in 8 hours) is due to the slope I park on and two-hourly self-levelling, or due to a leak in the system somewhere. The experiment involves disconnecting the battery so that it can't self-level.

When I disconnect the battery, I'm going to lose central locking and the alarm functonality, so I plan to lock all the doors manually and use the front passenger door key thingy to get in tomorrow morning.

Can anyone see a flaw in the plan?
Do I need to know anything special about reconnecting the battery in the morning?

I'd be interested in the outcome - mine has habitually "self-levelled" itself during the week whilst parked on the slightest of slight slopes at the bottom of my drive

OK, suspension in off-road height, removed fuse 3 in bjb (air suspension ecu), and will leave it for 12 hours.

This will be interesting.

Mine is parked every night on a 16° front-down slope and has never "sat down" to access height.

What it DOES do every time, is to re-adjust the rears if I test for the car being locked by operating the tailgate opener. I tend to do this in passing to walk the dogs, and it ALWAYS does it.

My thought processes wandered on from here to wonder if I could use the activation to start a sound-chip "Touch me there again and I'll thcream and thcream and thcream". (With apologies to Violet Elizabeth Bott).
 2006 D3 finally swapped for a 2016 D4 Graphite in Graphite grey. No mods

when the car "does stuff", like adjusting suspension, does the system give off a signal and could this be linked into a GSM tranmitter so it texts a mobile with a code or something ... ??

Mine drops all four corners maybe 10mm if I come back and open it up within a couple of hours of parking it up.

I have quite a steep drive. When I park in Normal height it often farts and drops the nose as I walk away. No sign of it dropping any further though. Doesn't seem to move if I park it in access height.
 Too much intellectual firepower can damage your common sense.

I don't suppose the surface the car is parked on makes a difference does it? I mean, when the suspension drops, the wheels spread further apart yes? So if there's plenty of friction, maybe that'll 'hold the car' at a certain level, and if you're on gravel there's nothing stopping the car going down faster than a Dutch Big Brother contestant, right?

Just wondering if a different speed at which the front and back wheels spread apart will fool the system into thinking the front or back is higher than it should be, and forcing a re-levelling when none was needed?

Yep. And a bit lower on drivers side rear. About normal on nearside.

My take on it is there's probably a problem with the drivers side front only, and the drivers side rear is getting pulled down as a result.

Will call GS and ask to speak to one of their techies, see what they say.

Update

GS Stockport replaced the front air spring assemblies for me on Tuesday. Had to be done as a pair and I've got the nice firm ride associated with new shock absorbers. Very Happy

To confirm the problem is solved, I repeated my test and took fuse 3 out of the BJB again this morning. The front is still at normal height Thumbs Up, but the rear is still sinking on the drivers side Rolling Eyes

I'll give GS a call back tomorrow. They did say they tested all corners and only the front drivers side was faulty, but my experiment seems to suggest otherwise. We'll see what they say...

Is there a standard height that the car should sit at when in access, normal or offroad??? Mine has had all new height sensors and seems to do offroad height when normal height selected, normal when access selected & sooper dooper extended mode when off road height dialled up. Will get measurements & pics sorted out tomorrow. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Final update on this. Guy Salmon Stockport replaced a valve block on the rear, and a section of pipe that had some sort of 'nick' in it, and now I have no trouble keeping it up all night Wink . Result Smile
