Gov't bails out car industry.
OK, the government has just announced a £2bn plan to bail out the British car industry.
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20090127/tuk-go...dbed5.html
BUT, what they seem to have forgot is, how to convey this to the 'man in the street'.
If I were Mandelson I would arrange a scheme whereby the consumer also benefits from their purchase.
I know we've all seen the 'Buy British' ads before.
Trouble is, these ads were weak and only playing on patriotism.
That doesn't work as well as 'money in your pocket' for the average Brit.
So, my proposal is:
That for everyone purchasing a new British Built vehicle - car, bus, motorcycle, etc.
Be it JLR, Honda, Ford, Toyota, Vauxhall, Triumph, Nissan etc
The purchaser should receive [over and above the deals secured at the point of purchase] a special Government 'payback' for their purchase ie £100/£500 cashback.
This idea would tie in manufacturer direct with consumer.
So? .... what's wrong with this plan I dreamt up whilst having a beer?
...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

The best way to incentivise the deal for the purchaser, would be to make the first 2 years Road Fund Licence free on all new cars made in the UK.
Simple, effective and therefore unlikely to happen

As a long term plan I think it's not bad, it will keep the engineers in employment and therefore the design in the UK.
But I do agree that in the short term this alone will not work, the problem is the EU, they will not let the Gov help UK companies directly by reducing tax, subsidising new British built cars etc.

The real problem with Land Rovers UK sales collapse is Gordon's tax hikes.
This has decimated the resale value which at a stroke has taken those that change every two years out of the market. I doubt if such people have any real financing difficulties but to be sure they will not stomach a 50% drop in the value of a prestige vehicle in 12 to 18 months. So they will just keep hold of what they have.
Not only has he placed swinging vindictive taxes already but has shown he is able to and delights in imposing retrospective taxes, totally frightening the less financially able away from the used large vehicle market for ever. Until he restructures and injects confidence into the future cost of ownership of such vehicles there is no chance of a secondhand market, and without that no chance of selling new cars.
Without a revived home market any other action is a total waste of taxpayers money.

Is not the issue of unsold cars due to diminishing fleet car sales, which have been the mainstay of the uk car industry for many years? Reps are less visible on British motorways these days! White vans will be next as the pallet networks are down 50pc volume now since mid jan.

Does this cut it with EU trading laws ?
does ANY of the EU countires bail out plans fit in with EU trading laws? I can only imagine the likes of France and Germany not caring for that at the moment. they all need to just stabilize the situation and provide stimulse for the consumer (us) help in our purchase, be it tax cuts, road stamp free for (x)yrs etc

They mention that GKN supply the chassis for the FL2 and RRS, but not the D3 - does this mean they only supply the top-half of the chassis and not the common D3/RRS lower chassis?2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG

The D3 and RRS chassis are the same. The car 'shells' are built/welded in Land Rover. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.
