Wheel Nuts Question

I hope some-one can explain this to me please, but I don't understand the wheel nuts on my recently bought 08 XS. Are these the actual wheel nuts themselves, or are they some kind of cover which you have to remove first? I am asking this, because they feel like plastic and several of them have a little bit of play in both directions, as if they will pull off to reveal a real wheel nut.

I noticed this after I had a puncture repaired. I always check the wheel nuts afterwards because I have had them left untightened 3 times in the last 25 years - twice by the same company!

Thanks.

They are the nut, a light alloy cover over steel, which can corrode & swell leading to swollen nut syndrome!! Shocked Shocked

And change the locking nuts for normal ones before they fail (it's what they do) & you're well stuffed at the side of the road. Thumbs Up

Yup, those are the actual nuts Thumbs Up

Without the "covers" the wheel brace won't fit.

I had to replace mine as the tin bits were damaged. I only found that out when I got a puncture.
I bought a set off the Bay, a supposed genuine set and have lost two covers already Big Cry

Thanks for the confirmation and for the advice. Is there an alternative locking nut that doesn't fail so easily.

Just the standard nuts. I've never heard of a D3 wheel stolen from on the hub, the tea leafs just nick the spare which is peewee easy to steal. Rolling Eyes

Are there replacements for the original nuts? Changed my wheels the other day and had a hell of a job removing several covers due to "swollen-nut-syndrome".

I have had the same type?? nuts on the D2 for 7 years, and haven't had any problems with them.

Not if you are bright enough to invest in a RLD wheel protector

Must have been the same set that I bought, four of my covers have gone missing and a few more are loose Rolling Eyes

I should have smelt a rat when I first got them, I noticed that the thin stainless steel cover doesn't wrap around over the shoulder at the back of the nut like the original ones did. So much for "genuine" Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

A bit spendy, but I notice Wrington Engineering now make stainless wheelnuts for D3. (This might be old news, I just haven't visited their website for a few years.)

I use Wrington nuts and anti theft nuts on my other Land Rovers and they are excellent quality.
