HGV Fuel Pumps

Hello,

Can filling the D3 using the HGV pumps (when quiet etc!) damage the tank? I've used them a couple of times as it's quicker to fill up. Last time I did, someone mentioned that the speed at which the fuel comes out can damage the tank...

Nonsense?

I've been filling mine up using an HGV pump at our local Shell garage for the last 3 years and it hasn't damaged my tank. You can also latch the pump nozzle open to save you from having to squeeze the trigger all the time, making your hand ache. The only thing you have to watch is the Auto shut-off on the nozzle - it's sometimes a little slow to react and before you know it, you've got a load of diesel dribbling down the side of the car.
 Now an ex-D3 owner after 7 happy years. Miss the car but not the big bills Smile

I regularly use HGV pumps. Especially if filling up a near empty tank, it saves time. No problems at all.

Noticed the last time I used the HGV pump when I had tintent on tow, the diesel cost me 2p per litre less than the price at the car pumps.
Anyone else had this?
 ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

My 300 TDI book said that you could use HGV pumps but the Disco 3 book says that you can't.
 Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that they're not out to get you.

I was told once that HGV diesel is different to car diesel with a different mix of additives - or is this a myth?

It was my old merc dealer told me never to be tempted to fill up with HGV diesel because it could damage the car, I've never thought to question it since...

There could be something in that. The old 300 TDI was an old fashioned engine whereas the D3 is a common rail job (I think!) so the advice in the handbook not to use HGV pumps could be for that reason. I wondered why the tank on the D3 would be so much weaker that the 300 TDI. I don't know if HGVs have common rail engines or the old type.

I think the reason that you are advised not to use HGV pumps is the difference in the filler necks of HGV & "car" tanks. HGV pumps dispense diesel at a faster flow rate through a larger nozzle. As such it's possible for diesel to gush out when full.

I'm always careful & never had any issues. Never heard of HGV diesel being any different.

Guys,

The question you have to ask; Does the fuel for HGV's come from the same diesel tank on the forecourt as that for road cars, I think you'll find the answer is yes.

The extra cost it would cost Shell (for example) to send a tanker just for HGV diesel wouldn't be worth the outlay at a lot of stations. The only difference is at what speed the fuel comes out of the pump, which by the way cannot damage the tank.

Same diesel I would think. My local Shell garage has a normal pump, but a push button to increase the rate of flow for HGV's. The local Jet garage also has this option.

There is no difference in Diesel fuel between the car and HGV points. Everybody states that the diesel fuel has been developed for the modern car, thats a crock of Censored .

Diesel has been developed for the HGV use, the modern HGV diesel engine to meet Euro5 spec now has an exra tank for ADBLU, I digress. This basically is a chemical by product resembling SHEEP URINE. it is injected at the combustion stage therfor improoving torque and economy and also emitions, this will be available for car use, almost definate. The problem is you will have to pay for it ontop of a litre of diesel. If you drive when the adblue runs out, no biggy, the ecu knocks back 25% performance.

What I am trying to say is the HGV diesel engine and pump are highly developed, most economic, and efficient motors that cars are following, the fuel has to supply these engines across the range.

Adblue is the way forward, and yes I would get it if available in the future.

I used to own two forecourt filling station businesses and I can tell you for sure that there is NO DIFFERENCE in the fuel being supplied by the HGV pump. The only difference is the flow rate from the pump. Also, some forecourts will not allow 'cars' (inc. D3's) to fill from the HGV pumps.

Sorry for being thick here but I have never used the HGV pump because I thought the nozzle was too big to fit in the filler neck. It obviously does fit then.
