Topping up the oil - TDV6

I checked the oil on my car, and found it needed topping up. The car has done 5500 miles, and this is the first oil requirement. It needed 2.5 pints to bring it up to the bottom of the high mark.

If you need to top up the oil, you will need a funnel or some other kind of pouring device. It is nigh on impossible to get the oil into the engine without spilling it everywhere.

Gareth,

Thats curious, did you check it when you first got it too?

Also what type of oil did you use, I think the books says to use Castrol, or perhaps thats waht my service guys recomend, cant remember which though!!

I did check it when it was new, and it was 3/4 full. I have monitored it a couple of times since, and as it was down to the bottom orange blob on the dipstick, I decided to top it up.

It does say in the manual that oil consumption will be higher when new, and that diesel engines use more oil than petrol engines, so I am not concerned. I just wanted to warn anyone that they should not take the oil level for granted, even on a new car, and that to just try and pour it in without a funnel, will result in a messy experience.

I used Halfords 5w 30 semi synthetic. It has all the correct conformations on the bottle, as listed in the manual, so it will be fine.

Oil topup

I noticed the oil level had dropped a lot after only 2000 miles. After speaking to a friend who works at a LR garage, he told me the TDV6 engine has a lot of carbon fiber in it which will initially absorb a lot of oil.

I decided to have an oil change at 3000 miles and was rather shocked at the £130 cost for 5.5 l of oil and a filter!!
