It appears a cycle carrier is not made by LR if you have the detachable tow bar, so I've just bought one from Pendle Bike racks, who knew all about the car and its shape and have recommended one, which came yesterday and is a great piece of kit taking 4 bikes. An excellent company to deal with too DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

Money and fair words Neil R Seriuosly including postage it was £136. You get three decent straps included in the kit. The best bit is I can buy a seperate type approved mounting for my wifes car (shh Frontera) for about £25 which means 2 decent car racks for about £160. I had the multi height towbar fitted and purchased the LR bike carrier. I've yet to actually use it. It came with a bungi style cord and an odd looking plastic tie with a loop at one end....I'm not sure how these are supposed to hold two bikes on, perhaps those straps you mention would be better. After formally using a Thule roof mounted sytem on an estate car using bungi cords while the biks dangle at the back seems a bit dangerous. 2005 TDV6 SE Silver/Black Manual + Alpine

Any chance of a photo? How does it fit, does it work with the towbar, or instead of it. In other words, can I tow a caravan with it fitted?

I'll try a photo tommorrow, but I'll have to email it as posting photos is way over my head!!! With the removable towbar you can't tow and carry bikes with the system I bought or LR's. Whe I tow the bikes go in the caravan, but I'm intending to put the carrier in the car/caravan to allow day trips out with the bikes to explore further afield. Your range is limited when your oldest is 5! DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

Thanks for that. I also put the bikes in the van, but unfortunately I had to make an emergency stop on the way home from the lakes when a learner driver nearly had a head on with me. The bikes shot forward and smashed the cabinet at the front of the van!
Its going to be very expensive to fix
I think I'll get a roof rack system instead.

Ouch! I considered a roof system, but I'm only 5'4", short of carrying tall step ladders I couldn't see how it would work for me LOL My wife is 5'10" so I suppose I could get her to put them (the bikes) up there! DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

I'm 6' 4" and wouldn't be able to do it, you would need to walk on the roof . Roof carrier usually use a bracing arm to steady the bikes so you would need to reach up to the top frame. I'm seriously considering upgrading to a bike trailer. 2005 TDV6 SE Silver/Black Manual + Alpine

I was looking at the G4 D3 on the gallery, and it has a rear access ladder, that may be the answer.

The idea of pulling the whole family around on that bike trailer while I tow them in the D3 gets more appealing by the minute . 2005 TDV6 SE Silver/Black Manual + Alpine
