Just got Mugged by Stratstone Nottingham 2nd MOT !
Well
The dreaded out of warranty 2nd MOT on 'special offer' at Stratstone Nottingham has just taken place
To say it failed outright would be an understatement
54 Plate , 54K Motorway Miles
Failures
1. Excessive play in Front Left suspension lower ball joint/wish bone
2. Excessive play in Front Right suspension lower ball joint/wish bone
3. Bulb out in number plate
4. Chip in screen within the A zone
Advisory
5. Excessive leakage rear left and right drive shaft boots
6. Coolant level to high !
7. Excessive oil leakage Engine/Gearbox
8. Vehicle over 3 years old require brake fluid change
OK
1 & 2 appear to be common issues - £17 + vat each for the parts £250 + vat to fit !
3. Done
4. Interesting passed last year whilst in warranty this year fails - Sorted being replaced tomorrow
5. parts cost not found out yet believe he did say but need picking back up off the floor as he delivered the fitting cost ..yes you guessed another £250 + VAT
6. I'm on my way to Tesco to buy a straw
7. No oil usage in the engine so have to assume that it's been overfilled at some stage ... no surely not
Any advice please on 1 & 2
Any advice please on 5 ...surely these can be re packed and the boot clip replaced tightened ?
7. I guess Steam Clean to check for piece of mind as yet again wasn't identified at the 45,000 mile service ( in warranty at that time -- funny that eh ! ) advice if it is leaking here
So the 'special offer' - half price by the way at £25 would potentially generate a revenue stream of in excess of £600 + VAT
Well ( being slightly cynical )
If in a credit crunch and price crash you cannot sell cars, you have to make the most of every available opportunity presented to you !
Being even more cynical a labour rate of close to or slightly over £100 an hour is well simply not acceptable ( LR wake up and pay attention here )
The most amusing comment made was ' well we will leave it to you to contact us when you want the work to be carried out '
I had run out of expletives at that stage so simply turned on my heals and departed for the very last time...
Needless to say it won't ever be going back to a main dealer again .... specialists all the way from now on.

Do you have a local indi LR specialist that you can take it to, you don't have to get it done by ratstones, just take it back for the retest. If you threaten that they may drop the cost down a chunk. Also is the Alligence thing stilll happening where you get lower rates on cars over 3 years???

Doesn't the LR extended warranty carry an MoT guarantee??
Either way I'd certainly take up 1 & 2 with LRCCCheers

Oh and I don't think 6 and 8 are MoT-relevant so I'm surprised they have made it in as MoT-advisory, you may want to take up such scaremongering tactics with the dealer as a further lever...Cheers

I thought Brake fluid was done at Year 3 service anyway? so surely it would need to be re-done at year 6, not year 5.....?Bodsys Brake Bible

Almost Snap The front ball joints are looking like a common failure.
Whilst I appreciate some of the good work main dealers do, the £95 per hour that mine charge is as you say, excessive. Now my car is entering into its 5th year, <£50 per hour at the local indy specialist is looking attractive for the future.
The other thing is, taking your car to a LR dealer could be a mistake, as they know what to look for! Oh for a bit of hindsight
Gareth - agree with you on the issue of LR dealer knowing what to look for. Mine had it's 1st MOT last year at a main dealer whilst still in warranty - a few minor points picked up but nothing major. Then, during the 75K service only 2 months later (out of warranty) the same delaer advises me that both ball joints plus a bush at the rear had excessive play . So recently I got SWMBO to take it to the Toyota dealer where she works for the latest MOT, and hey presto, the ball joints and bushes are OK - well within tolerance and no need to change! And that's even with me asking them to check them specifically. So there's a lot to be said for getting the MOT done at a non LR garage, or even the local council MOT centre which has no interest in failing you as they don't do repairs.

Point very much taken about LR knowing where the faults are
Windscreen scheduled for tomorrow PM , think I'll pop it through another test elsewhere
If the Ball joints can pass they can be looked at over the next month or so , reading around they look as though they are not quite up to the job on such a heavy vehicle.
anyone got a view on the drive shaft boots ? The rubber boots themselves look A1 can they be repacked with grease and simply tightened ?

As long as the boots are not split I dont see a problem possibly only need a new clip to secure each end and make them grease tight again
It's a pity there is no consistancy in MOT's as one mot testers opinion seems to differ from another
My brother recently got banned from one MOT station for arguing with the tester over the issue of a fail ticket on his vehicle yet two testers at another station said they would pass the failed item ( a tyre ) and provided an extract from the MOT handbook for him to take back to the origin MOT place. When suggested that an appeal might be in order the pass ticket was issued

Thanks UNG that's exactly what I thought I'll give them a good clean re pack and re seal with new clips
I think it's just the shock of being told they are £250 in labour to replace that really annoyed me.
It is worth remembering that at times of economical downturn, when dealers, factories, etc get quiet, it is often the worker,rather than company policy, who is interested in keeping his/her job that; in the case of factories and car plants may not fit a part right, or in the case of a MOT person, fail a part, with the intention of creating more work. It has happened before.

What annoy's me is how all the jobs seem to be quoted in multiples of £50 or £100 . It's no wonder the techs have no interest in the job when they only see a tiny fraction of what is charged in their pay packet
