Replacement bulbs for Lightforce 240s

Not sure how many forum members will benefit from this tip... Possibly two...?

The corrugations in Tunisia did for both the bulbs in my 240s, and rather than jump in with the obvious solution, go to a LF dealer and ask for replacement bulbs, I decided to do some research and see what the options were.

There's two separate camps of 100w G6,35 axial bulb manufacturers, some who make and sell them for £1.50, and others that are in the £9-£15 range. I tried the £1.50 camp and found the light output from the perfectly engineered parabolic reflectors was completely ruined by the slightly wider coil and a 2mm change in the position of the coil. My pencil beam turned into a flood that was barely distinguishable from the light out of the xenons.

So I've ordered some of the proper ones. Goes to show - you buy cheap, you buy twice.

And now with photos...

On the left is the original Osram 62138 with it's nice short tight coil.
In the middle, the cheapo alternative, bigger coil, closer to the base (which is what I put my lost pencil beam down to)
And on the right is the new Osram 62138 with a more traditional coil across the way, but a bit squashed.

Well chuffed that I managed to break the leg off it before I even got it plugged into the light Rolling Eyes

The results with the new Osram bulbs are fantastic - even better than before the original ones. Perfect pencil beam, and no dead circle any more.

Rob, just a thought, but are the 240's not adjustable like the 140's that I have on Betsy? If you turn the whole light unit it adjusts the beam from a wide angle to a pencil beam as required. Maybe you could have adjusted the lamp to work with the cheapo bulbs?

A good thought, and yes, the 240s are adjustable. But. to get the pencil beam you want the reflector as far back as possible, which it already was.

I might possibly be able to achieve the same by making a 3mm spacer to move the bulb out a bit Confused
