Plasma Rope & Roller Fairlead
Can a plasma rope be used with a Roller Fairlead or does it have to be a Hawse ?

I got told no, even a polished roller can damage a plasma. Plasma can compress to a very small size, and could be forced down the side of a roller, even if the gap is tiny.
Ditto to what Gareth said, this is like what you want:

I seem to remember that Marcus has firsthand experience of what a roller fairlead can do to plasma LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

Best not too. The rope can get nipped on the edges of the rollers and snap.
I still have mine through a roller though As soon as I can find the bits in the garage I'll change itDuncan

As long as you are careful & don't let the plasma get too near any of the four corner points of the fairlead opening you should be fine on that count. The most common problem is rust on the rollers and seizing of the rollers. They then become very abraisive.
Plasma and similar type ropes can become abraisive if dirt and mud gets in the weave. This is when you find out if you have got a propper job hawse made from hard aluminium or a cheap job that just looks the part. Not heard of any problems with stainless hawse.

snatch blocks?
Is there a problem using snatch blocks with plasma rope? As on my camel I had steel and now on the G4 it's plasma so I have still the old snatch block, could I still use it?Roel

I run a MSA rally recovery vehicle and we have been using Plasma type ropes for the last 2 years I say plasma types as its a generic term with many manufactures calling their ropes similar names when there is a wide range of type and qualtity of what appears to be the same rope
A hawse is very important as I have seen ropes become trapped and trashed in a roller
Ropes need washing if they become dirty
With regards to snatch blocks the better the snatch block the less promblems you will have some of the cheaper and or poorer quaility ones have gaps between the pulley and the carriers this is where ther rope will deform and get trapped
Another positive with the ropes is that if a piece does get trashed or starts to wear out the it is very easy to cut out the section and shorten the rope or use it to make up a couple of extension ropes
A bigger danger to plasma types ropes is the brake system on many winches which in some cases can cause the drum to become very hot and will damage the ropes
I would be happy to post some links or more advice if people would like it.
(not sure on the rules for linking to web sites as most of them are actually trying to sell ropes etc.)
DarrenSome people are only alive because it is illegal to shoot them!!!!!!

although Ive not experienced this myself i beleive the drum can melt the 1st layer of rope if you are not careful. have you ever seen this ?
EDIT you just sneaked in there before me KEN. I think it might have been you that mentioned the melting thing to me . since then ive used the winch with a few breaks to let it cool and fully unwinded after use.Duncan
