Having an intermittent issue with the auto gearbox, sometimes when applying power after coasting there is a clunk/jerk as the transmission takes up. Also, some changes up/down are not that smooth with a real lumpy feel. Doesn't do it all the time but is very noticeable, never had this with any of the other D3's. Car has only done 34k in 3 1/2 years so am not sure if the gearbox flush would help as that seems to relate to high milers.
Any ideas please? 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Hi Andy,
Mine also does this to some extent.....MY06 with 53,000km.
When coasting to a 'give-way' and then applying power whilst in second gear, there is sometimes a bit of a clunk as though it was taking up slack... I could notice it even more if I was coasting down a slight hill at the time.
The dealer said that this was normal and also that it was due to the auto-box shifting down into 1st gear as I applied power.
I told them that it did the same whilst in 2nd gear command-shift and they didn't seem too bothered. Of course, they have been unable to repeat it and when I've shown them, they say the can't really notice it (it's mainly evident if you're driving - not as a passenger).
Sometimes I notice that gear changes are a bit 'fluffy' or lumpy, but the next time I drive it, it's fine.....I just put it down to the adaptive box.
I would think that if you needed a gearbox 'double-flush', then you'd notice some quite severe symptoms.
Cheers,
Paul
PS. When cold, does your auto-box tend to act is though it is 'slipping the clutch'? I think mine seems to be doing this more lately, but I'm not sure if it's normal due to the cold transmission oil. 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

Might be worth asking the Stealer to update the gearbox with the latest software. I'm sure this was a problem with the FL2 so a software update was issued that aplies to the D3 as well. Had mine done when trying to cure the juddering and it does seem smoother since!.... 8) ------------------------------

This is normal, the lockup in the torque converter does not come into operation until the oil temperature reaches a certain level.

Cheers Gareth/Dunc....I thought it was related to the torque convertor and low oil temp, but seem to notice it more lately.... 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

interesting.....
I had also complained about whining in the front diff and yesterday they were going to drain it to check for metal particles in the diff oil....

Ahhh, another curve ball for you then.
I had a "whine" from the front diff, or so I thought and it turned out to be a bearing on the water pump pulley. Duncan

Yep - yet another - they've already replaced the power steering pump, ARB bushes and rubber spacers to solve other 'clonks, whines and squeeks' It's taken them one year to admit that there was actually a whine from the front transmission (it's now so pronounced that they can't deny it), so I'm happy

There's a TSB telling dealers to take an oil sample from diffs and transfer boxes. If it's apparent that the oil is contaminated by metallic flakes (the lining on the inside of the transmission case) it's a straight warranty job. As it takes all of about 15 minutes from handing you keys over to handing them back to carry out this check, I do wonder about all these dealers who insist on lengthy test drives. In particular I like the dealers who only allow their deaf technician to come out with you
As regards transmission clunk, my last one did this but the new one seems fine so far (22,000 miles) I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

I seem to be getting a slight whine from somewhere in the drive train as well
It happens only when the car is under power and disappears when coasting...
Wonder if it is a transfer box or one of the diffs??
I guess the simplest thing would be to drive with open doors and listen where then noise comes from
Did anyone had similar symptoms and what was the conclusion? D3 XS Manual - gone

No noticeable whine from the diff but the backlash is very noticeable (although intermittent). Will let dealer have a look and see. 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto
