Snow & Ice Driving
No doubt by now you will have found that by driving along normally then switching to mud & snow the engine mapping will act as if you have lost the accelerator control. Obviously it reduces your gas pedal by making you press the pedal much further down to get acceleration. This in fact is to 'stop' you doing it of course, the whole point of gently gently.
What you will find is that the ABS well work a lot more if you are aggressive. With my tyres it does not need to work at all.
Above are pictures of the Cooper STT's on a fairly steep slope. No problems at all and they throw out the snow amazingly. Second picture is the footprint of the tyres.
Enjoy the snow, guys we have a bit here now.

I was out in the D3 yesterday in the snow and the Goodyear Wranglers actually did pretty well (they are almost new). Today I went out in the RRS which runs on 19" Pirelli Scorpions and I didn't feel nearly as secure. The Scorpions seemed far more likely to drift accross the road and very keen to pick up a frozen edge (there is a lot of frozen tyre tracks out there) and run along that edge which can get the vehicle out of shape. The softer suspension and better visibility in the D3 also seems to help.
In future, when it comes to snow and ice driving - I am taking the Disco !Disco 4 TDV6HSE

Totally agree! the standard 18" Wranglers are very impressive - Great at 90MPH and bloomin good in the snow today.
How good are the coopers on the road BN?Some say the glass is half full. Others that it is half empty. I say 'Are you drinking that?"

Better than I expected, but not for everyday use of course as they are 80/20's

Has anyone tried the Pirelli Skorpion Snow+Ice? I want to purchase a second set of winter wheels (and maybe a little bit of off road but not much) that I can keep on from October to April as I regularly travel to the Alps and with this kind of weather becoming the more common what the heck...ThksWinchMan

I have no personal experience of the Pirelli's but they were given top marks (along with Continental 4x4 WinterContacts) in a review of winter tyres in the November issue of the German magazine AutoBild alles Allrad.
On the basis of the article, I have ordered them for the Disco I should collect about the end of February.

Car rejected, refund back from dealer, but dealer in no hurry to take car away just yet, so I still use it. I am at LRE Eastnor on and off for a while and LR have helped a bit.

I've got the standard issue 18" Scorpions and am very impressed with them. The braking performance in the snow is outstanding. I normally drive Audi Quattros' which, whilst they offer great traction in the snow, have poor braking with over enthusiastic ABS. This is not the case with the Disco on setting two. A great choice!

Is the Scorpion Snow and Ice a different (winter) tyre from the standard Scorpion? I rather suspect so.

I have just looked at my the Pirellis, on my car (collected 23 December). They are Skorpions and have M+S in small letters on the sidewalls.
I assume they are standard, but don't know if there different grades of M+S available on Skorpions

Yes, it uses a softer rubber compound that does not harden when the temperature drops. It also has very fine grooves in the tread to improve
grip on snow and ice.
Like all winter specific tires (tyres), it will be very "interesting" in warm weather, and high temperatures accelerate wear.
I think those of you that consider the summer (M+S) version a good winter
tire (tyre), should come to Sweden and try "real" winter tires (tyres) (with studs) on icy roads...
