For vehicle use I would recommend the Garmin Nuvi 710 as screen is big & wide, mapping is good, bluetooth link to your cellphone, good MP3 player and FM transmitter which broadcasts through your D3's sound system Thumbs Up

For hiking I use a Garmin Rino 130 which has a built in FRS/GMRS radio (walkie talkie) so you can communicate with other Rino uses or anyone with a small Motorola walkie talkie. Tremendous features in a small package such as positioning friends, digital compass, barometer/altimeter Thumbs Up You have to order these directly from the USA as they have never been import into RSA Rolling Eyes

I am going to be in the bush for the rest of this week, so guys enjoy your week at work Ner Ner

gerhardt,
I think the entry level Garmin for off roading is the Quest.
From what I have seen, any thing under +/- 4.5K does not work for
the off roader.
I have one and use map source to get my map upgrades. You can
interact with Google Earth and have down loaded maps which were
done in tracks4africa for one off events. IMHO tracks4africa would
be compliant with the Garmin Quest, perhaps just Google Garmin
and brows. If need be I could find out from the club fundi's, as they
use the more advanced ones @ about 8K a pop.

There is a known problem with the Quest and T4A .....general consensus on T4A is the GPS for overlanding is the Garmin 276C.

Yup agree with Aubrey . If you can afford it go for the 276 or even the newer 296 Thumbs Up

gerhardt,
The September SA4x4 has a good article on page 94 about Garmin GPS units. They also go with the 276C for dash mounted units. I have a 60 CSx - the screen is bigger than the eTrex range. It is light enough to take along on a hike. I'm using it with Garmap.
On the issue of Tracks4Africa I can tell you that on a trip to the Zambezi in Mozambique we could not find Mary Livingstone's grave with an eTrex that had T4A installed. So I tried the POI on my 60 CSx. It had her grave site and we found it easily. It would be interesting to hear of experiences with Tracks4Africa and how it compares to the Garmin software.

It would be nice if Land Rover decided to get map upgrades outside of SA...maybe Tracks4Africa would be more interested than Garmin. Garmin is not interested to supply any unit other than their own apparently.

I know its a bit OT - but do you think the 276 will work on a motorbike as well?

I am in the final throes of acquiring the Disco3 of 2-wheels (GS12 adventure) and need to upgrade my old 76S, and I want a GPS that will work on both D3 and GS. certainly looks like it would work

OK, just spoke to the Garmin guys

The Zumo 500 is specifically designed for a motorcycle, but will also work great in a car.

Thats the one I am going for 3 main reasons - ultrabright display, dual Bluetooth (play MP3's and get voice comands into your helmet headset, and take calls from your cellphone) glove-friendly touch-screen

I get dealer prices, so its a great deal. PM me (SA only) if you want to chat about a good price on any Garmin, and I will donate to the site for every unit sold
