Leaving Discovery in Park
...that's leaving in the park gear, not leaving it in a park!
Practically, could there be long term damaged caused (strain to gearbox, drive etc) by leaving the D3 just in park, and not using the handbrake?

Always do it otherwise I cant get the key out
If you mean not appling the EPB when leaving the car in park yep I do that as well in fact I do that in all autos

I wouldn't do this on a hill necessarily though ...the whole weight of the vehicle will just be resting on the park pin 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I always park a car on the h/brake and then apply park in autos. Take the strain off the transmission where possible and practicable.
Except when off-road when the conditions and what I have driven through will influence the decision, with EPB I wouldn't use it unless it was required.The M-Power Express

LRE suggested putting the car in neutral , applying hand brake , foot off brake and the only into park

Probably more of an issue is if load is on the pin when you come to move out of park (because the whole cars weight is being held by it then that might possibly strain something in the linkage if consistent over time.
That said I don't recall EVER hearing of a transmission pawl/pin ever failing to keep the vehicle stationary (campared to many stories of failed handbrakes and runaway cars). Does anyone know if they ever do or are they all massively over-engineered BECAUSE they may be used as the only brake when parked???Cheers

I always put mine in park and have done with every auto I have had. Never had an issue with any of them and hence no EPB problems 8)Global Warming.... I'm luvvin it

I'm more concerned about the dodgy D3 parking brake, so I minimise its use. Unless it's being parked on a significant hill I just leave it in Park.

Aren't your auto's like my manual, the parkbrake engages when you take the key out of the ignitiion. (I wont be too smug, I found this out by accident)

Tis cool for quick departures out of the motor - rip the key out and the EPB automatically engages.
Had the same in my S-Type before, probably the same system

did catch me out when I jumped out without the key, and it started moving, at least I didnt have to reach for the handbrake lever, just pulled the keys out.

The auto doesnt automatically apply the parkbrake. You have to do it manually.Global Warming.... I'm luvvin it
