Here is a snippet from Range Rovers .NET about the RRS =
In our testing, ground clearance was not an issue as there were few places where any stock 4x4 would be in danger of becoming high centered. However Ken informed us that if this should happen, the suspension automatically senses it and goes into "Extended Profile" mode whereby the vehicle is raised another 1.5 inches. Then, if necessary, the driver can raise the suspension another 1.5 inches (for a total of 3 inches over "off-road" height) by holding the "up" switch on.
Is this feature also available on our DISCO3 vehicles?

Remember, RRS is a Disco 3/LR3.  Anyway, it's in the manual. Yes. The vehicle sometimes enters Extended Mode for me while dealing with snow for reasons I can't exactly explain. (The logic for when it's activated isn't always obvious.)

It would be good to know how to get into Extended Mode manually, I'm sure there is a secret way of doing it. Be useful for washing the underneath if nothing else! The End

Don't know how to get into extended mode in the first place (apart from getting stuck  ) but extra-extended is achieved by foot on brake pedal and holding the suspension lever in the 'offroad' position for 3 seconds. Note that this only works once already in extended mode

apparently, there *is* a way of invoking it.... all I can think of is to stop somewhere soft but with good ruts, invoke access mode then, once extended is forced through blind panic in the ECU, push extra-extended mode with the brake pedal & suspension lever function

Then you don't need to think any more.....that is one way of doing it. Another is to prevent the suspension lowering when access mode is selected - for instance, if you have a trailer attached with the jockey wheel down. The key is attempting to invoke access mode when the suspension is unable to drop - one wheel at maximum upward travel would do the same thing.

Out of interest, extended mode has been fitted to all previous LR vehicle with EAS, including the original Classic LSE. I've tried all sorts of ways to invoke it on LSEs P38s and Disco3 without success. According to the fault finding manuals for previous cars the ECU receives a signal from chassis "impact" detectors. I don't know if this is the same on D3. However, previous models are almost undriveable in extended mode as there is so much pressure in the air spring that theres no compliance left. 2011 D4 Landmark, Mini Cooper SD Clubman, Range Rover Vogue SE

I suspect it's got more to do with sensing reduction in pressure feedback in the suspension system, coulpled with input from traction control telling it that wheels are spinning freely...
