whatever you do, don't put your hand near the spray. The injector system operates at horrendous pressures and it would do a grand job of injecting you! I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Please
Treat this seriously as a diesel mist is more inflammable than a petrol one*, with a LOWER flash point (325°C as opposed to 480°C).
A
* if it lands on anything hot
Edit 2 - just spoken to my brother who was in charge of Land Rover insurance investigations - diesel will ignite in contact with hot metal where petrol needs a spark.

Well thanks for everyones help and advice. LRA were unable to help as the policy had lapsed under the previous owner.
To close the story off ....
I took it to a local garage where the mechanic had a look. He said they could do it but as they were a small garage they would take time to get the parts. So he phoned the nearest LR approved repairer and told them exactly what parts were needed and he booked it in for me. No charge for his help although i insisted on forcing some money onto him for a drink.
The approved repairer took it in at 2 pm and said it would take 2 hours or so. After 4.5 hours they completed the job - charge £180 including parts labour and TAV. I think that is marginally better than we would be charged over here. I was very pleased with the service I received and the price.
So I still have the vehicle in one piece

Call LRA
They will come to you and take the D3 to the dealer for a fix if they are not able to do so on site.
LRA will also liaise with the French speaking garage in order to relay your problem and sort a fix out.

I think you're missing the point Simon - it's fixed and he hasn't got LRA cover anyway.
To that point does anyone know if it's possible to extend LRA cover beyond the initial 3 years without taking out the extended warranty? LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

Sorry I was mid posting when I got called away from what I was typing... at the time of my reply, no mention of being out of cover was stated nor the fix
7 minutes was all it took
And if you look at the post times... they are all a little screwy too

Andrew
You are quite right about diesel mist igniting on contact with a hot surface, we lost two crew members to a main machinery space fire on my first ship with exactly this problem. A fuel pipe to a diesel Perkins had developed a leak and subsequently filled a large compartment with a very fine diesel mist, when it come into contact with a small part of un-lagged exhaust section it went of like a bomb. It was'nt a pleasent event recovering the two lads who where down there trying to sort the leak out. Diesel is quite flammable in the right/wrong conditions, glad you got it sorted asj968 Club Exped trailer

Cheers, Lee.
Horrified to have such a graphic corroboration of what to me is a theoretical risk... but, yes - glad it was sorted safely, asj968
I'm always surprised that nowhere is it put forward that diesel is trickier than petrol...
