| Squeaking noise from hand brake! |

Hi! Guys,
I get this horrible squeaking noise as you pull away. It seems to be associated with the hand brake. It's not the brakes binding as if you press the foot brake it makes no difference. Only done 4500 Mls Anyone had similar problem?

Yup, at about the same mileage. Its rust debri building up in the rear disc drum castings which means that the hand brake shoe binds or doesn't release fully straight away every time.
Mine were both replaced under warranty with no quibble some months ago. Stratstone Pickering certainly know about this one as they have done a few.

There is a TSB (LA206-002) that refers to this, not rust but a park brake shoe retaining clip that has become dislodged or has broken.
The TSB only refers to changing the park brake shoes and fitting kit but it's possible that the rear discs may have to be changed if they have become badly scored on the handbrake surfaces

I'm only repeating what I was told at the time. They replaced the castings on mine aswell as the shoes etc as they had rusted and were full of ground up rust particles.

No criticism inferred.
Workshop supervisor told me that they had to replace castings on several 'early' cars like mine. Maybe there were some inferior ones? Don't know. He did ask whether I went off road a lot eg. in mud/water.
Someone wrote on here (think it might have been Winger) that there was a problem with water/muck getting out once it got in.

It's not just the handbrake shoes, I have to 'treat' my discs, brake calipers and (as far as I can get to) the handbrake to a damn good jetwash to dislodge all the mud and muck. Had a 'grip the drivers seat with @rse cheeks' moment last weekend after driving round on a relatively dry & sandy site, with the occasional mud - hole. Despite having dried the brakes out, came up to a set of traffic lights as they started to change and the brake pedal went to the floor  pumped up OK though, once i'd worn the majority of the stuff jammed in the pads away, no problems

I find that I get a noise from the rears after a dam good jet wash, especially if I don't drive round the block straight after washing to 'dry them a bit'.

If you wash but don't go (when you're in a rush) in the recent cold spell we've been having you'll find your brakes frozen in the morning  The End

Err this is not just a Land Rover issue, our Mini Cooper S was washed on christmas eve, and was supposed to be driven this morning, except it would not move 
Took several attempts of dumping the clutch to free the hand brake, and it made a very loud crack when it let go. Seems OK now though.

If I wash and don't go, I leave the park brake off and car in gear (by holding the park brake lever down while the key is removed from ignition.) This seems to stop the brakes rusting on.
