Towing MPG

Hi folks,

Might have a towing job come up for a friend. Not sure what MPG to quote.

Job involves driving Lincoln to Exeter with my empty ifor 146 flatbed approx 250miles then returning with Longwheel base Defender.

I initially have calculated 26mpg on way down 90% motorway, and 20mpg on way home totalling £125 for fuel @123.9p per litre in my 05 Auto TDV6. Sound about right?

Any pointers for costing towing jobs are welcome.

I would aim lower overall 20mpg for the whole trip.
If its does significantly better you can give him some money back, but always going to be awkward the other way.

I’ve got a manual and get a average of 22mpg with my iwt 146 when delivering hay, which would be about the same weight and wind resistance as a defender. That is taking it steady and anything over 50mph you will most likely be under 20mpg when loaded.

Cheers Pete, is that from the digital reading or worked out at fill up?

Towing our caravan (1500kg) I usually average between 20 and 22 mpg depending upon terrain. Highest has been 26, and lowest 19. Those figures are calculated using the brim to brim method. The manual D3 that I had before was similar.

Towing mpg

I get around 19 mpg on my 05 auto with about 2.5 tonnes on the back on a mixture of A andB class roads ( no motorways ) so I would say 20 mpg average including motorways is about right , just keep the speed down ....50 mph is good for mpg and safety

I get 18 mpg when towing the challenge truck. But with all the spares etc it probably weights in close to 3 ton.

Thats some outfit you got there!

Thanks for all the responces. Looks like if i average it at 20 for total distance, the way down empty will cover any drop lower than 20 on the way back.

Ill just go fast enough to get into highest gear if it all feels comfortable and traffics clear.

It’s based on actual fill ups using fuelley.

When I go on a long run to collect a car I take the headboard off my 146, it’s only 19mm bolts and normally makes a bit of difference on the mpg, one less thing that’s causing wind resistance I guess.

Much easier to ask too much and return rather some than the other way round. I know this from bitter experience.
