How to remove stains in paintwork |
|
I received my Xenon headlight units today so as it wasn't so cold I decided fit them on & to give the car a proper wash.
To my dismay what I thought were just dirty finger & hand marks on the body turned out to be a lot more sinister. It seems that the stains are underneath the top coat & can't be cleaned off. Also I missed a stain on the roof. It kind of looks like a coffee stain about size of 50p piece & also seems to be beneath the topcoat.
My question is what can I use to remove these kind of stains.
By the way the Xenons look

i might be wrong, but if they are below the top coat, sanding and a re lacquer will be required
Are you sure they are below the topcoat? could it be etching from bird dropping etc

How old is the car? could be 'wrapguard' staining - a known issue for all car manufacturers
The cure is normally putting the vehicle in a paint curing oven for 30 mins

I could be wrong about stains being under the topcoat but it sure is under something, maybe some knd of paint sealant as I was told it had been Diamondbrite treated. Its def not from bird dropping & the marks are def hand/finger marks.
I'll take a picture tomorrow & post it.

the top one looks to have effect the black patch too Has somebody been using chemicals and open/closed your car? or splash the roof?
It hard to say where there are in relation to the topcoat or the paint layer but they don't look like your normal every day stain/blemish
Where abouts are you based? JKP knows a thing or too about detailing cars, he maybe able to have a look at it for you, but he's north of the boarder
How olds the car? Is it still under warranty, if its below the topcoat you might have a claim, if you have had bodywork/resprays done, they come with a 3 year warranty too normally too?

Have you tried polishing the stains out with normal (not abrasive) wax? I have had stains like the ones on the roof, caused by parking under a certain tree in the rain, but they came out a few days later, with a quick wash and polish. The finger marks though look like someone has touched the doors with brake fluid (or similar),on their hands Hope that's not the case.

Second one looks like finger marks when the door was closed. Could have been done when coating was done, door closed when still wet. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

It's pretty unlikely, but if it were brake fluid it would have affected the paint finish, and probably wouldn't be able to be polished out. If it is just the coating the dealers say has been done, then it should be able to be removed easily. Or it might be just some kids greasy finger marks in the coating. I'd try polishing with autoglym or something before worrying too much.

It helps if you fill out your vehicle details.
I would take it back to the dealer and see what they say. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

I worked for Mercedes for 4 yrs as a valter , to me that looks like BIRD SH*T
I know this sounds silly but bird sh*t can eat into the lacquer
When new cars arrived I had to prep them , a few came in with what looked like the above and they could 'nt be removed by polish , they had to be resprayed and re-painted.

Yip, and some tree sap can do the same also. Avoid parking under bushes, trees, birds, etc...... Sail Fast - Live Slow...

Could well be any variety of things. I dont think it's bird poo, which can etch the paint, but this is usually only visible at certain angles under light once it has been washed off. An the pattern does not suggest that.
Try using Autoglym SRP (red bottled polish) which has chalk as an abrasive using a medium pressure. An other alternative is to use a medium grade claybar.
A quick easy step would be to use a warm washing up liquid mix on the areas. If you have the dreaded supaguard or similar then this will help break it down and see if the marks can be removed. Or go through one of the drive thru foam wash places (easiest way to remove supaguard )
Without actually seeing it, it is very hard to advise something that may work.
