Diesel smell, is it a split crossover pipe?

I’m looking for help from my learned friends.

For a couple of months now I’ve had diesel smells in the cabin on idle once the engine is warm but can’t seem to find any leaks. Now recently I’ve seen some vapours coming out of the bonnet, even when the stop/start has kicked in.

I have no fault codes, no loss of power nor mpg so I’m stumped. Going into my indie in a few weeks for diagnosis and hopefully fix.

Could it be the crossover pipe?

I’ve probably driven around 5k miles since the problem started, is it safe to continue?

Your experience and knowledge would be greatly appreciated Bow down Bow down

Probably one of the egr pipes. They weaken and begin their long slow failure until you eventually get a fault code and an audible signal (rushing air). Fixable with body on if the nuts undo, body off if they don’t.

Thanks NC, I’ll get them to try a smoke test which should hopefully show this up. Surprising though as it’s only a 65-plate although it is on 105k miles now. Should still be okay to drive?

I’m no expert but there is quite a lot of wiring in that area, probably not wise to blast it with hot exhaust gas too often.

Any other vehicle it would be a leaking injector washer, although they can be challenging Rolling Eyes

If you remove the thin metal heat shields from in the wheel arch you may be able to see evidence of the leaking.
It’s part of the complete eye and cooler assembly but the pipe on its own can be purchased from LR
To swap the pipes you have to remove the whole egr assembly
 Must stop buying shiny toys....

I had a very similar experience to what you are describing.

The diesel return line to the fuel tank from the HPFP circuit was fractured in the area around the steering column/ bulkhead causing a slight leak.

I could smell it all the time, but could only visually see the diesel vapours illuminated by my headlights when the vehicle was parked up idling.

I hope this all makes sense to you.

Well, diagnostics done and fix complete (I hope). Turned out to be a tiny chip in the “dome” on the end of one of the fuel lines from the rail squirting out the tiniest of fuel, the hot fumes of which were then sucked into the heating vents.

Although my indie said they hadn’t seen it before their supplier said it wasn’t uncommon.

Over £400 in labour as there was so much to strip out to get to it so I don’t wish this one on anyone Sad

4 hours to do what? Fix the leak or the egr pipe?

Apparently one of the fuel lines to the injector (?). They had to strip lots out to get to it and replace the pipe. About £60 from LR for a kinky pipe.

TBH I’m just glad it’s fixed, over 6,000 miles driven with this flesh wound and the D4 never missed a beat Very Happy
