Turbo Actuator Arm Movement

Hello everyone,

I'm hoping that one of you will be able to help with something that I've noticed on my 2.7 TDV6.

A visual check of the turbo vane actuator arm shows that it's moving freely when the ignition is switched on although the motion of the arm isn't entirely smooth - initial movement towards the engine block is smooth but when it gets to the end of its travel it springs back sharply to its normal resting position. Then the actuator catches up and pushes it a bit further away from the block then it goes back to its normal resting position - the cycle then repeats.

Should the movement be smooth in both directions? I would have thought so.

As you may suspect there's a reason that I'm checking the movement of this arm but I'll come onto that in a different thread!

I have the suspicion that the guide vanes within the turbo have become disconnected or have failed in some way but any advice gratefully received.

Ah, may have answered my own question!

Tried again with a different search on here and have found a YouTube video showing actuator movement and mine doesn't look right.

Looks like the turbo needs to come out again as I suspect that there's something internally wrong with the vanes.

Might be time to go and see the scrap man.

Soot inside the turbo is often the problem, clogging the vanes.

Wynns turbo/EGR treatment into the fuel tank can work wonders. and is def. worth ago before pulling things apart or going to the scrap yard


assuming the car is taxed and drivable on the road

Thanks for that advice Pete, I'll try it for a few months and see if it makes a difference.

The truck is driveable and is on the road but TBH I don't really have a use for it so I'm reluctant to invest much more time and money into it.

that can be another cause TBH. Not using them, or moving them around / town driving.

Could always sell on here with known issue

Yes it's probably too good to scrap so I'll think about selling it next year.

It's due its MOT in February so I'll see if anything else is flagged up then.

I'll probably recover my enthusiasm when the weather starts to improve next year (as I'm a driveway warrior) and, if the turbo/EGR cleaner hasn't worked by then, I'll probably whip (Ha!) the turbo out again and see what's wrong.
