Lower steering column replaced - same issue. |
|
Hello
For about 2 years now I have suffered with notchy and stiff steering upon start up from cold on my 05 disco 3. After the car has been driven for a few minutes the problem is gone and doesn't really return until it's parked up overnight
Bought a second hand lower column off eBay belonging tona disco 4. When it arrives it seemed in excellent condition with the UJ being very free on both directions. I would say one direction was more free than the other, but in general it was very good
Took the old one off which itself was also a lot better than I was expecting. One direction was quite free and the other was much more stiff but still easily movable by hand. Anyway fitted the new one and I must say the steering feels more positive and tighter
However, the problem still remains, the steering is EXACTLY the same on the morning when the car is cold. No minor.improvements, no change in characteristics, exactly the same
Which makes me think could it be something else? My rack does have a leak and I know my fluid could do with being changed as it's manky but could this cause the symptoms I'm describing? Or could I simply have bought a dud steering column.
Any help appreciated

Easy way to find out!- change the fluid, it’s probably 50% water! It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

the fact the problem occurs after car being parked overnight seems to point to rack fluid /pressure issues rather than something purely mechanical
steering pump maybe as well does it make weird sound while operating before things start to be normal?

If it was a seized joint would it constantly be notchy throughout driving or would it free off like I am describing?

It's only been on a few weeks. It was a used part off a D4 on eBay. When it got delivered I was chuffed at how free it was. Moved easily in both directions and I lathered loads of lube on it before it went on the car.
I would say it probably was 100% free in one direction and about 85% in the other. Clearly not brand new but very very good.
When I've looked at videos on YouTube etc I've seen some taken off which looks nearly seized solid.
I would have thought I'd see some improvement in replacing my old one but in terms of the notchyness it's exactly the same

After 2 mins of driving the problem totally disappears so it's not a massive issue, just on initial startup.
