D5 D300

What's the D300 straight six done to/for the D5 compared to the TDV6?

It's I believe a reliable engine, but what's it done to the character of the car?

I'm still not taken by the looks of the D5, but whichever way I look at it the lifting tailgate with drop down shelf and flat loadspace are very much in it's favour.

The D200, D250, D300 and D350 are all the same engine with different software.

I have D250 Defender (a D5 in a different body) and drive it hard in the UK and Europe. In two years and 32500 miles its never missed a beat. I think it's a cracking engine with good torque and general performance. At no point have I wished I had a D300. Don't ask about MPG, I never think about it. Is a 3 tonne brick with a 3.0l engine and four wheel drive.

Just cruising around the forums, including Def2, there just don't seem to be any issues. It even sounds nice and growly under full chat. Thumbs Up

However, I miss the practicality of the D4 Big Cry

Moo… while I know that the Defender and the Disco are based in the same chassis, I beg to differ with your opinion that they are basically the same just a different body.

I have a disco5 and a def 110, and they two drive completely differently!!

My Defender is a P400 and my Disco is a TDv6, so the engine feel is different, but the whole suspension setup on the Disco feels different.

I think that to answer the OP’s question, we need to find someone that has had both the TDv6 and an Ingenium 3L diesel.

Thanks guys.

Yep Moo, you know you and I agree wholeheartedly on the whole D4, D5, defender stuff.

I really don't want to move on from my D4 HSE Lux, but as predicted at almost 100K miles and 9yrs old, just like my D3s it's suddenly developing issues.
It passed it's MOT last week without a single pick-up, but I've had to swap in a new Rotary gear selector this weekend, it's needed a new tailgate actuator a couple of months ago, and there's been other very minor issues recently that all disappear after cycling the ignition.

I change the Oil and filters every 7.5K miles, it's had the gearbox flushed, and I always change brake pads, discs etc well before they are needed, etc, etc, etc, but how do you do preventative maintenance on the massive number of electrical systems in a newish car?

I simply can't afford to have a spare car hanging around that does everything I can do in the D4, and the thought of not having it for a week let alone longer if something major goes wrong fills me with dread as it would give us massive logistical nightmares.

As mentioned before the D5 doesn't really appeal, I'm currently drawn to a post 2017 L405 4.4TDV8, but just can't ignore the D5's flat load space with rear seats folded, coupled with the lift up tailgate.

Even the cheapest of used D250/D300 defenders is way out of my price range, especially as it would be for what I(we) consider a flawed replacement for a D4, the L405 4.4 is far more achievable price wise, but apart from the looks a used D5 D300 falls between the two above price range wise and does more of what a D4 does than either of them.

Saying that, I'm still drawn to the fattie.

I'm sure somebody must by now have put the 3L straight six in a D3/4.

I Had a FFRR on order but have cancelled it and am carrying on in my 150K D4. The final swing factor was all the electrical systems on new cars for three reasons 1. they try and control the car too much as opposed to the driver; 2. I think all this screen based control varies between inconvenient and dangerous; 3. i think the electrics are a weakness and make the new car as likely to break down as the old.
Off to the Alps for xmas and new year. Could be regretting my choice?!

Out of curiosity I drove a 2021 D300 D5 HSE yesterday.

I have to say I was impressed, and can see why people like them, but it felt more SUV than 4x4 to me.

The second row seats didn't fold completely flat, almost, but not D3/4 flat, and the load space felt as though it was a bit higher off the ground, but that was probably me.

I liked the drop down flap, the larger lifting tailgate obviously gives better protection from the weather.

But I'm still not convinced, I don't need 7 seats any more, and as it felt more like a FFRR to drive I don't see why I would choose one over a post 2017 L405 4.4TDV8 which are a lot more affordable and still only £190 a year to tax.
Insurance is a bit higher, but not much.

Still considering my options and keeping my D4 going for a while longer.

The high “waistline” of the D5 and much smaller glass area, in particular the windscreen, compared to a D3/4 and L405 FFRR, make it feel much more like a car/SUV.

You very much sit in a D5, as opposed to sitting on a D4/L405.

To me, the D5 feels like driving a raised up estate car. Which was nerve wracking off road, as I couldn’t judge where the front corners were, as you can in a D4/L405.

As always though, it’s down to personal preferences.

If you drive an L405, make sure it has the active suspension. Which from memory all the SDV8’s do. I’ve driven a 6cyl one, which didn’t have it and didn’t like the ride.

Go for a FFRR SDV8 and you’ll have the best vehicle/engine combo possible.

Disco and rrs d300//350 get better performance than the defender - the whole drive train and software gives a different experience from the engines.

Overall i think all the engines are ok - i never had an issue with the disco ingenuim engines

Here's a second. My 34,000 mile, 2 year old 3.0l Ingenium engine is pretty good. Super smooth, good torque and sounds nice on full chat. Not hearing of any major issues on the forums or social media.

Have you heard anything we haven't?

Daft question but has anyone come up with a ramap or widget that turns a D200 into a D300??
