Intermittent Bluetooth issue |
|
Hi all, I knew I’d be back for help eventually, thankfully minor this time around, though I still ramble as much as ever.
I’ve been trying different things for a couple of weeks to see if I can resolve it with the help of the search function and Google, but no joy.
My MY16 D4 Commercial (XS I believe by having so many toys within) Bluetooth will randomly lose connection and on occasion, freeze and/or grey out a lot of options on the screen. This can be anywhere from 2 mins to 10 mins into a journey, with the only exception being when I first bought it and drove 8 hours home when it worked flawlessly the whole way.
I can get a few minutes into a journey, enjoying the splendour that is the Meridian sound system, and all of a sudden it will go off, occasionally with a click (like a jack being unplugged). I’ll lose nav, 4x4i and cameras (though reverse cam still comes on in reverse, but will then leave the screen black afterwards) and the audio and phone sections of the screen will become unresponsive. Eventually (5mins-30mins) I’ll get access to the audio again and be able to select DAB (not that there’s any coverage up here).
I don’t believe it’s loose connection related, it’s not caused by bumps and can happen stationary. No infotainment related codes on the GAP, only codes relate to second battery (gateway module etc).
I have tried:
Removing the MagSafe charger and all additional cabling (in case of EMI/other interferences)
Unplugging and replugging the modules in the rear drivers side boot panel
Not connecting straight away (Bluetooth off) and waiting until we’ve been going a few minutes to let the systems settle in.
My next move is going to be a different device, current device is an iPhone 12, the others will be an iPad, or the wife’s iPhone 11. We are a single device family unit and all Apple. I’m not sure I even know anyone with anything non-Apple that I could ask to try.
I also keep thinking to check the connections to the amp beneath my seat, and then forgetting. It’s currently raining so I’ll forget again soon.
After that I’ll raid the trusty old Kinovo out of my D3 and plug it into the glovebox as a temporary measure.
Thanks brains!
Edit: Tried iPad. Same result.
Edit2: iPad connected again on the return, and disconnected as expected. But then by surprise reconnected itself within a minute and played music for the remainder of my short journey home. Only another 2 songs so within the realm of further failure. I’m not sure that my phone hasn’t done this at some point. D4 XS Commercial - MY16 - Corris Grey

hmmm, are you certain your device is not disconnecting for reasons including power management or perhaps there are 2 devices competing for the singular connection? 2015 LR4 HSE Lux Aintree Green

They’ve never behaved like this before on any other cars built in or added (the mentioned Kinovo dongle) system.
The late D4 also seems to have dual connections available, as during this afternoons test, the screen showed music from the iPad on the music square and a connection to my phone on the phone square. (Each distinctly labelled “Andy’s iPad” and “Andy’s iPhone”) which I thought was very clever.
No long drives in the immediate future. The next will be the end of next week, a mere 700 miles each way. That’ll be a test if any suggestions come up with a maybe fix! D4 XS Commercial - MY16 - Corris Grey

Update: When the Bluetooth loses connection, the DAB reception also nearly disappears. I was listening to Radio Gael (only station I can find), now I’m not.
Is this sounding more like a IAM problem? From what I could see/feel on the back cubby, is it all in one module on these late/last D4s? D4 XS Commercial - MY16 - Corris Grey

Further update:
It’s not necessarily a Bluetooth issue. Without a Bluetooth connection at all (using DAB or auxiliary) it still drops audio and goes all frozen screen after the same amount of time, and I also lose power to the USB in the glove box, next to the auxiliary port.
Anybody any thoughts?

Longer term, more observed update to this:
When the error (that doesn’t trigger a fault code) appears, I lose:
4x4i,
Nav,
Parking sensors (but keep the rev. camera, though it’ll stick on screen if I select it manually),
Access to audio, non-responsive to screen or button (but if I’m already on the radio, it stays fine)
Aux input also goes dead as does its related USB port. (Poor DAB reception may just be a feature of the model, sir),
Access to phone, non responsive to screen or button.
What I’ve checked/changed:
All connections in rear drivers side boot,
Device I’m connecting,
Removed every charging cable and 12v USB plug,
Changed both batteries (had the dead second battery fault, now clear)
A little stuck now, and increasingly frustrated. Firmware flash maybe? GAP suggests all audio related modules are up to date.
Any suggestions from you fine folks? D4 XS Commercial - MY16 - Corris Grey

Still the same. But! I now have a fault!
Both ACM and FCDIM report “U0184-00 (2F) Lost communication with audio unit”
From what I gather, the ACM is the amplifier in the boot side cubby, and FCDIM is the screen itself. Does this mean the “audio unit” is the middle part of the dashboard, housing the CD player and presumably multiple wireless components (Bluetooth, key etc) and acts as the brain for all audio tasks?
Even fault codes can be progress! D4 XS Commercial - MY16 - Corris Grey
