Links to battery chargers on Amazon

With winter on the way it's important to ensure your battery is in tip-top condition with a advanced battery charger (aka conditioner). Keeping the battery charged can extend the life of the battery especially during winter.

In the site shop you will find a range of adapters which allow you to very simply connect up to the towing electrics socket (13 pin or 12S socket) to charge your Discovery's battery.

These adapters remove the need to open the bonnet to connect up a charger or fit another externally-accessible socket.

I need to upgrade to a proper charger/conditioner. You haven’t mentioned the CTEK MXS 10 which is the one I had my eye on. Is this overkill?

Which you go for depends on budget and needs, but the 10 is worth having listed Smile

Bought the MXS 10 today and I think the Disco knew... I tried to leave work this evening and it gave a half hearted attempt at spinning over and failed to start. I will see if the CTEK can revive it but I suspect it needs a new battery.

I would like to order a charger and adapter today, I will need to check which towbar electrics I have as have only had the D4 for a week.

One question I have, if charging like this does the second battery also get charged?

Also any member recommendations as to which charger/adapter combination to go for? Not sure I understand the difference between the 5, 7 amp versions etc of the CTEK.

TIA.

There is a general consensus on here that the more powerful the charger (amps) for when the battery is in trouble. I’m sure someone will explain the situations when this is important. However, I believe that there is a limit to the ampage charge you can apply via the electric tow connection, so check that.
I chose the 7 amp because I felt it a good compromise between power and price, but also it has a 5 year guarantee where as the 10 & 25 have a 1 or 2 year guarantee (not sure). Note, I don’t have a tow socket so don’t charge via that method so please check.
I top up charge my battery every 2-3 weeks because of the driving I do. When my stop/start stops kicking in I know it needs a long drive or a top up charge.
Cheers
 Gary

Hi

I have a Tmax split charge system fitted and indeed the aux battery gets charged at the same time via the 12s socket

Highly recommend the adaptors from Martin Thumbs Up

hi could you explain the "split charge" system? Not sure what that means.

I just got the 7 amp ctek today from Amazon, if I buy the towbar adapter will it charge both batteries? If not then I think I will just use the croc clips that came with it.

Is the split charge system a modification?

TIA

Johnny

You have not got split charge, it is an aftermarket fit, but with SS you have two batteries, the second small battery will not be charged via the tow socket, do not let this put you off buying the tow bar socket adapter as it is absolutely indispensable for convenience.
A new charger will come with croc clips as standard, which can be used on the small battery without disconnecting it if needed, the small battery does not need topping up as often as the cranking battery. I use my tow bar adapter every week in winter once a month in summer, just plug it in and leave overnight, you cannot overcharge a battery no matter how long you leave it connected, a fully charged battery life is twice as long as a battery that is under charged and for this reason alone it is worth buying the adapter.
If the SS light comes on to say it is not available the small battery needs charging, is SS does not work with no warning light on the main battery is under charged, if the SS does not work after charging overnight the battery needs replacing.
Any of the chargers will do the job, the lower the amps the longer it takes to charge the battery, the 7amp is a good compromise, neither will overcharge regardless of how long they are connected even days. Thumbs Up

Do you know the maximum ampage charger that can be used through the tow socket? I don’t have one so don’t charge via that method just want to make sure the tow socket will take the 7amps of Johnny’s charger.
Cheers

Just read the tow socket advert. Looks like it’s 15 amps.

@martin

I just checked and might have missed it but have you a similar thread on the D5 forum? in my experience so far the D5 is far more vulnerable to low power issues. Leaving it for just a few days sometime triggers a low power warning.

Would be worthwhile promoting the stores adapters over there.

appreciate that the larger capacity will do the job better but what are people typically buying for the disco

its a fair price hike from the 5.0 to the 7.0 so is the 7.0 or even the 10 worth the extra or is it overkill for occasional use ?
