Do I need a towbar to fit a rear mounted cycle carrier |
|
My D3 isn't fitted with either but I want a tailgate carrier so Mrs Motoberg can throw the bikes on when I'm elsewhere, so is this going to become expensive, do I need a towbar first so any potential bike carrier can pick up the mountings ?

53 views and no replies, must be a hard one this
Anyway, after trawling a bit I like the look of the Thule EuroClassic Pro 903, this is a towbar mount, so yes is the answer for this particular Q, however, looking at the mounting instructions, you require 40mm or more between the bumper and the front of the towbar ball, can anyone please advise if this dimension is OK from their towball, I intend to buy one of the clip in casting jobbies from Fleabay
Tks

I have a Thule towbar mounted one which works fine.
I would have a look at the Saris racks as well though (Wiggle.co.uk etc) - they look like they would fit a vertical tailgate like the Disco and may save the cost of a towbar.

I have a towbar off Ebay and the EuroClassic; works a treat.
I have travelled in the UK at 70(ish ) with six passengers, a Rottweiler, a fully loaded expo rack and the bike carrier attached (the D3 is so good that I forgot it was all there).
Fortunately it was still there when we stopped at a filling station after 100 miles to pay that nice Mr Darling some money.

I purchased removable tow bar off ebay and I am using the Thule 903 rack plus extender (carries 4 bikes with extender). I am really happy with it. Safe and easy to use. ALTERNATIVES...............No alternatives for off-road capability.
If you want Surrey plush, go for a Range Rover. If you want Manchester bling it's the Range Rover Sport. But if it's a seven-seat, go anywhere 4x4, it's time to Disco.

we went to the new forest week before last, bought a thule 3 bike carrier on impulse from halford, £99.99, brilliant bit of kit, only needed an extra number plate, has the light bar and everything.
oh yes, I've got a hieght adjustable tow bar, worth fitting one, never know when you might need one to go to the tip with a trailer or house move for the kids!! (another 10 years to go)

Can anyone tell me the rough costs of the removable towbar and multi heigh bar options?
Pick up the Disco Saturday
(technically the wife's Disco but lets not split hairs)
Want to get a bike solution for the back, LR bike carrier needs multi-height but I know a lot of people that use Thule towball clamp racks with no problem so I am thinking the removable would be the neater solution.
Just wondered if there is a cost difference (need to PM The Large One perhaps!) between removable and multi?
Anyone found a cheaper alternative to storing the removable one than the £60 LR polystyrene block?!
EDIT: Oh, and anyone seen a "Thule EuroClassic G5 904"? it has a tilt function that looks like you could still get in the tailgate with it attached!

character, was it this one http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/...yrn_129468
How do you find the fact it has no bike clamps at the top?
