"Ticking" Noise on start-up. |
|
Guys. Some help and/or advice for a newbie please.
My D4, 2010 MY, TDV6, 133,000 miles.
On a couple of occasions, not every time, whenever I start up from cold, I hear a pronounced tick from the engine. It only lasts for maybe 10 -20 seconds.
Engine's running fine, on warm up, and in normal driving. No loss of oil, or undue smoke, and the vehicle pulls like a train and drives well.
Any ideas?
Is it anything I should be concerned about?
Is it something requiring urgent attention? I’m a Disco 4 believer. What a vehicle!

It's probably the hydraulic valve lifters ticking until the oil gets to them and the lifters then take up the clearance.
Pretty standard on these engines although normally just a few seconds only.

or the cam chain tensioners.
An oil change may make it go away. So if its due.... or not had an oil change in the last year....

Thanks guys!
My vehicle’s had a recent oil change (July), so the hydraulic lifters sounds the most likely.
The description given exactly mirrors what I hear, and the duration.
I’m relieved and reassured.

Above posts sounds correct however 10-20 seconds is way too long. 5 seconds max. You need to look into this; you're not achieving sufficient enough oil pressure IMO

It’s quite likely sticking, my suggestion is next time an oil change is due use an oil flush additive before you drain the oil. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
