[For Sale] 2010 D4 HSE Spares or Repair

Our car has a leaking crosspipe which is a body off job, so we’ve decided to sell for spares or repair. Shame as the car has plenty of life left in it….

2010 D4 HSE with 156000 on the clock. We’ve owned for 6 years.

Santorini Black
Interior Black Piano trim Registered Jan 2010
4 owners
20” 10 spoke alloy wheels fitted with good tread Pirelli Scorpions zero AS, fronts brand new. Full size alloy spare
Auto dip mirror with high beam assist
Cornering lights
Rear factory privacy glass
Adaptive Xenon headlamps
Factory fit rear screens with 6 x DVD changer, and remote control Digital TV
12pin Tow electrics

Anyone looking for an engine or want a project car.

£4,500

Car starts and drives but for obvious reasons I’d recommend trailering

😂

I’ll keep it on the driveway until all the other D4 engines have blown up…..

It will become the de-facto classic, in this spec will be worth a mint….

See ya later

I think to be fair the £2000 offer was a very real one. Your asking retail money for a car that needs body off work. Give that driveway a good clearing you’ll have it there for a looooong time 😂😂😂

Local to me so I was tempted somewhere near the asking price, apparently no longer for sale. I think the faulty pipe can be replaced with gearbox removal, but still a major pain of a job.

If you’re local, come and have a look. I’ll give the car a proper wash this weekend, probably on Father’s Day 😁

I hear you, but surely a working engine has to be worth at least that amount.

I’ll put it in Autotrader and see what the market says…

You would, but the market is fickle. Also it's a 14 year old oil burner that really only appeals to an enthusiast at that age and with its issue who has access to a post lift.

To be honest, I did think about it for my daughter to replace her 2008 D3, but her D3 is a cracking car that we know and I'm not sure what we'd gain. I actually don't think the pricing is that far out. When I was considering it I was thinking £4k wasn't too far out.

Personally, if the car is that good, I'd repair it and keep it. There are a few garages around me that are good and could do it without breaking the bank.

Anyway, GLWTS.

I sorted my crossover pipe, cam belt change and rear brake lines for just under £3k.

I was stuck with the conundrum of what is the motor worth vs what can i buy for the price i would have to pay to fix it.

Pick up trucks are £15k for something reasonable. Nothing as versatile as a dsico, so bit the bullet and paid.

Good luck with the sale, but surely you want to fix it.....? Twisted Evil Very Happy

I do want to fix it up.

I just have three young children and a house which needs renovating to kerp me busy. If I had just retired, this would be a perfect past-time….

A bloke on Twitter says crossover pipe is not a body off job. Anyone else agree with him?

Some have managed to replace via the wheel arch with plenty of effort, bleep words and time…..
I’ve also read someone managed to lift just the front of the body to allow access

But for me, get the body off and get it done, along with anything else that needs doing

So.......... I sold the car for £2,900

I got a quote for £1,750 to do the crossover pipe, which wasn't too bad, and I'm sure there would have been other things in there worth fixing at the same time, but TBH its gone to a good home, someone who needs a 4x4 for their gardening business. We have an MPV which will serve us well with ferrying the kids about over the next few years and keeping the cost down, and not being such a pressure on my time...

I have mixed emotions about the Land Rover ownership experience, I did the sums to see how much the car cost over 6 years and 65k miles.

The breakdown is the car cost 39p per mile excluding fuel, and £1.61 including fuel. Overall it only let us down once when the earth strap went, all other times, it gave plenty of warning.

I'll probably be back, because you only really appreciate what you have when it's gone. That air suspension is plush. That diesel engine is strong and refined. Yes it costs money, but you do get what you pay for in life.

When I do return, it will be with the spare funds of £2k per annum, to deal with maintenance outside of normal servicing.

I'll change the oil, filters and do the brakes and consumables etc but the car will go to the garage to have an inspection and have any work (suspension, drivetrain) done ahead of the MOT.

LR products get a bad reputation for reliability, but the reality is that people don't service them properly because they are big, heavy, complicated to work on cars. Electrics aside (why did JLR opt for all electric cars? Total suicide) ours was reliable and used every day multiple trips.

For those interested, or those thinking of taking the plunge, I ran the numbers below.

Purchase price £14,000
Sale price £2,900.00
Servicing / repairs £7,969.00 (see below)
Road tax £3600.00
Fuel £15105.15 £1.43 (average over the time from govt stats @ 27mpg average)
Miles 65,744
Insurance £3,000
Total £25,669 0.39043867120954 pence per mile ex fuel
161.23939848012 pence per mile including fuel

Gearbox flush £285.00
Service kit £105.00
Inlet Manifold + cambelt £1477.00
Service, brake lines, rear control arms £814.00
Suspension arms £948.00
Antifreeze £18.00
Brake discs and pads £198.00
Service kit £114.00
Door latch cable £25.00
Engine oil £80.00
Earth strap £144.00
ABS fault £1155.00
Alternator £212.00
Prop Shaft £304.00
Tyres £2090

£7969.00
