Has anyone tried to do rear belt with body on I know my front belt has been done but don’t know about the rear am I right in saying this belt doesn’t need to be put to tdc to be changed it’s just a belt and a adjuster isn’t it

it is capable of being done with body on, it doesn't sound a nice job. On a D3 it is not timed, on a D4 it is. Joined the BMWX5 45e group

Watched it done other day looks like you might need a couple of mirrors 😂😂 tbh hardest thing about it looks like removing the pipes and a few tricky placed bolts is it right that if it goes engine blows due to overheating I’m guessing it’s not done with the timing belt because not a lot of people know it’s even there

I believe you just stop if it breaks, no fuel to the engine. A dealer did my timing belt some years ago but didn’t do the back one, I think it’s just too difficult for some Joined the BMWX5 45e group

The rear belt should always be changed, front & rear belts plus oil and water pump can be done in 3.5 hours, by somebody who has done them before.
Its not hard just awkward, on the MY2009 year you have a couple of more pipes to remove and the rear belt cover has metal clips on it.
If the belt snaps it can destroy part of the main wiring loom at the top back of the engine.
Most dealers and garages that say it's ok to leave it do not want to do it.

I've done a couple now and they're not that bad if you can put up with a few scratched knuckles.... There's a really good right up on here on how to do both front and back belts, I think it was Disco_Mikey who wrote it. As Flack says above there are a few extra pipes on the engines from 07 on I think but they're obvious that they need removing.

Plastic cover wont stop much, gets melted through pretty quick.

Ye just saw picture buddy when I was looking for the post about how to cheers for heads up think I’m going to have to have a go at front and rear front looks like it’s been done but i think I’ll do them because diffs box and transfer have never been touched so think I’m just going to go through full car bit by bit only problem is at the end someone will get a right bargain or I’ll just have to run her forever 😂😂

Are they worth reshelling I’ve read there bad for the shells but surly this is more down to if oil pump fails or bad maintenance but I know with the m3 it’s a serviceable item and should be done think it was around 60k mark

I used that write up to do mine, as said hardest part for me was getting the cover back on.
Only thing I would say is I could not for the life me “fit the belt and tensioner at the same time” so fitted the tensioner loosely then fitted the belt round both large pulleys and then slipped it over the tensioner.
From what I’d read I wasn’t looking forward to doing that job but wasn’t too bad in the end. Steve
