Transfer case clutch switch

Wise ones
In this weeks edition of “ This bloody car is really starting to burn my biscuits”
So I’ve installed a new TCCM and the fault has gone, huzzar! Only to be replaced by another fault and some seriously naff gear changes, Boo!
I’ve tried to calibrate the transfer case loads of times but nothing works, but I noticed a new fault code P1936, clutch switch/sensor signal. Could this be the reason I can’t get a good calibration?
Thanks
Wes

Is your car auto or manual, and did you fit a new or used TCM?

The reason I'm asking about auto or manual is because the car members are working on is not always the same one listed in their profile.

Hello Prof G

She’s an automatic and the TCCM is second hand.
Thanks
Wes

You know they're VIN locked so calibration might be tricky. Do you know if the module came from an auto or manual car?

Well this is an interesting thing, I’ve spoken to a few people that say it’s not an issue but I keep getting a VIN incompatibility fault after a few minutes of driving which restricts the gears and turns the special functions off, which makes me think it is an issue.
Can the new unit be flashed onto the car?
Thanks
Wes

It can be overcome with calibration but I'm wondering if your TCM came from a manual?

Ah, that makes sense. Are the part numbers different?

The question that's nagging me here is whether the clutch fault is referring to the transfer case clutch wiring. Or, if it's your used TCM from a manual car which is looking for the clutch pedal? My thinking is that it's the former but just trying to be certain!!

When you do a scan which of the modules has the code P1936 logged?

Before you jump in to buy another TCM have a look at your list of modules in GAP and see what is there, or try a CCF edit if you haven't already done so and see if you can't improve things that way?

Follow GAP instructions very carefully if doing an edit, and be absolutely certain you have a fully charged battery which is still connected and charging whilst the procedure is in progress. Switch off everything in the car as well, ie lights, fans, radio, heaters, etc, etc.

Ah, so I’d better point out at this stage that I’m a tad compulsive… I managed to find another TCCM that has exactly the same part number as the first replacement had a completely different number. My logic was that the original fault came and went with swapping between the original TCCM and my first replacement, the car was happy unit it went through a few gear changes then this “wrong component “ fault appeared as I’m guessing the car worked out something was amiss. The new one should rock up in the next few days so I’ll report back

A used TCM will be VIN locked to the previous vehicle, and a new one would need to to be re-flashed via your GAP tool. You could try this procedure on the used one but I think you're always going to have issues remaining.

Poland

No issues at all with a wrong VIN in TCCM - you only have appropriate DTC regarding VIN mismatch. Thats all. Of course TCCM IDs must be same as yours old.
